What types of voice timbres exist? Male and female singing voices What is the name of the low male voice.

Each woman has her own ideal, it can be a hoarse voice, or a pure timbre, but I am one hundred percent sure that all women will unanimously say: “Of course, a low voice.”

Why is it so? Perhaps the answer is genetics - low voice = strength of mind = success. Success may include different parameters, but in any case, whether it is food production, that is, hunting (preference for women of ancient times), childbearing (value at all times) - all the same, the owner of a powerful voice will be perceived on a subconscious level as an alpha male, a kind of brutal macho , at whose feet all the individuals he meets on the way are thrown - some out of fear, some out of lust (depending on the situation or preferences).

“Where you don’t spit, some solid machos, but there are not enough men”

Although, again, the same scientists give hope: even if the male voice does not have such a strong charisma, it can still have an advantage for ladies. Guess why? It is unlikely that such a thing as loyalty will come to your mind. Yes Yes!

It is she who is faithful - it is believed that in men with high-pitched voices this quality is developed to a greater extent than in the representatives of the stronger sex, who, with their voice, roar and, of course, their mind, try to conquer as many women as possible. So, rejoice everyone - friendship has won! Someone wins, someone has the warmth of true love - there is plenty to choose from!

It has long been proven that testosterone affects the quality of the voice in men, but its role should not be exaggerated too much. A very low voice does not mean that this man has an excess of this hormone. If this were the case, then the entire bass part of opera houses would be observed by specialists - endocrinologists.

And vice versa, dear girls, I draw your attention to the fact that if a man can sing high it does not mean that he speaks high, or that he has low testosterone levels, most likely a man has a large range. The main thing is in what register he speaks.

The transitions from a whisper to a powerful chest tone saturate Miles' voice with overtones that are so pleasant for a woman's ear, and a large range and excellent technique allow him to hit high notes, both in the falsetto register and in the mixed register.

A little about the technique of male vocals: in the chest register, the vocal folds close tightly and oscillate with their entire mass. The arytenoid cartilages are also included in the vibration. This density of closure creates a rich, bright, strong and resonant voice. This takes up relatively little breath. In the falsetto mode, only the edges of the folds oscillate and a spindle-shaped gap remains between them, through which air flows freely. Therefore, the sounds of natural falsetto have a blown character, are poor in overtones and do not have much power.

Let's move on to pleasant things, so what attracts women to us in male voices?

Monotone male voice? Enemies are afraid, women love. Researchers from the University of California and the University of Pennsylvania found that women are turned on by a monotonous male voice. Not boring, but monotonous. Without transitions to high tones and excessive expressiveness.

A male monotonous voice is a sign of independence, power and strength. Such a person shows that he is in control of the situation. He is courageous and not afraid of danger. Women love that kind of voice. They subconsciously feel a man who can protect them in any situation.

In this recording, British actor Alan Rickman reads Shakespeare's Sonnet 130.

What to do?
Get used to speaking calmly, without harshness and vain expressiveness. They are not afraid of those who speak emotionally, but of calm equanimity. There is more threat and warning in calm speech.

male whisper

Many men neglect to whisper. But in vain! Scientists have found that women are turned on by male whispers. Researchers argue that in words it is best to use hissing consonants (w, w, h, u). These sounds have the most exciting effect on the female mind and body.

Legend of Russian dubbing Vladimir Eremin

What to do?
Tell the girl in a whisper in her ear: "Sasha walked along the highway and sucked dry." You can choose other words, but remember about hissing consonants!

This conclusion was made by scientists who published their article in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society. The authors note that the ability to determine the strength of the enemy through voice exists in animals, which is why it is possible that it is also present in humans. That is why the natural world is filled with many voices, thanks to which individual species of the animal world manage to profitably stake out the most profitable territory for themselves. In the animal kingdom, this is a normal phenomenon when rival individuals evaluate the strength of the enemy, for example, by a roar.

October 28, 1798 was born an Italian opera singer. She had an amazing range of voice: from high soprano to contralto, a range of 2.5 octaves. We decided to find out how opera voices differ from each other.

Soprano

The highest female voice, usually the first and second octaves are subject to it. And the second - often not completely. Sopranos are different: there is a coloratura (carriers of such a voice easily make complex passages in the entire second octave and even reach the middle of the third), dramatic (dense, heavy voice, easily takes notes up to the middle of the second octave), lyrical (soft, sincere, gentle , silver on high notes).

Parts for soprano are among the most common. The main heroines of operas, young girls and young women with certain life experiences. The most striking examples are the part of Tatyana from P. I. Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin" (lyrical), the Snow Maiden from the opera of the same name by Rimsky-Korsakov (coloratura), Liza from Tchaikovsky's "The Queen of Spades" (dramatic).

One of the best sopranos in the world Anna Netrebko.

mezzo soprano

Beautiful velvety, rich voice. The operating range is from the middle of a small octave to the middle of the second (of course, not in all cases). Singers who own such a voice often perform parts for contralto, and can also replace soprano. The parts for the mezzo-soprano are passionate, rich, sometimes somewhat ponderous, which in no way detracts from their beauty. Mezzo is divided into three subtypes, like soprano: coloratura, lyric and dramatic.

Famous roles: Amneris in "Aida" by G. Verdi, Carmen in Bizet's opera, Marina Mnishek from "Boris Godunov" by M. P. Mussorgsky.

One of the brightest Russian examples of mezzo-soprano is Elena Obraztsova, for many years the former prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theater.

Contralto

The rarest and lowest female voice. Unfortunately, even in large theaters there is not always a contralto singer. Such singers work in a low chest register, in the range from the F of a small octave to the first notes of the second octave. The most beautiful in the performance of the contralto is the low notes, the upper ones sound short and with tension. In operas, the parts of boys and young men are often written for contralto. For example, Orpheus from the opera "Orpheus and Eurydice" by K. V. Gluck, Lel from "The Snow Maiden" by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, but there are also female characters, of course: Olga from "Eugene Onegin" by P. I. Tchaikovsky.

Unfortunately, contralto singers are rare and not well known. But for example, we can recall the voices of pop singers: Tina Turner, Sofia Rotaru, Edita Pieha.

Countertenor

A very rare voice. The highest of the male operatic voices, ranging from the beginning of a small octave to (sometimes) the end of a second. The art of such singing was revived in the middle of the 20th century. And as a rule, countertenor singers perform parts written for castrato singers in the Baroque era (boys were subjected to castration operations before breaking their voices and puberty, due to which their voice remained high, and they performed female parts in operas, and initially in sacred works, in choirs).

Examples of such parties can be cited both from baroque opera and from modern, now the countertenor is becoming more and more popular, although it still does not lose its exoticism, stunning the audience. You can listen to Handel's opera "Julius Caesar", where the title part is written for a countertenor, or you can listen to the opera "Zurich 1916" by Christopher Butterfield, where V. I. Lenin sings in a countertenor.

Tenor

Male high singing voice. Its range is from the beginning of a small to the beginning of the second octave. The ability to play the upper notes is especially appreciated. If the tops are weak, then such a tenor is unlikely to become a famous soloist. Like female voices, like sopranos, tenors are divided into lyrical and dramatic voices. There is also a tenor altino, it is distinguished by particularly high and sonorous notes.

There are a lot of famous and beautiful tenors. For example, Luciano Pavarotti(lyric tenor) or Placido Domingo(lyric-dramatic tenor).

There are a lot of parts written for tenors. Often the protagonist in Italian operas sings in tenor. The Duke in Verdi's Rigoletto, Faust in Gounod's opera of the same name, from Russians: Lensky in Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni in Dargomyzhsky's The Stone Guest.

Baritone

Medium male voice, range from A large octave to the middle of the first octave. This voice is strong, rich, velvety, it can be softer and more mobile, it can be close to a tenor, in which case it is called a tenor-baritone. If the baritone is stronger on low notes, but has enough free upper notes, then it is more likely a bass-baritone. Like other voices, there are also lyrical and dramatic varieties of this voice.

Perhaps the most famous baritone in the world - Dmitry Hvorostovsky, in Moscow it makes sense to listen Vasily Ladyuk from the New Opera.

There are a lot of parts for the baritone, composers often entrust them with the most important characters in the work. For example, for baritone are written Mozart's Don Juan, Mizgir in The Snow Maiden, Mazepa at Tchaikovsky's.

Georges Germont's aria from G. Verdi's opera "La Traviata" performed by Vasily Ladyuk

Bass

Low, deep, strong, mesmerizing voice. The range can range from mi-fa of a large octave to f-sharp of the first octave. Basses are distinguished both in height and in timbre. There is a high bass cantanto, and the lowest bass is the profundo, which can be used in choirs even up to the counteroctave. In terms of timbre, along with a deep profundo bass, comic bass, bass buffo are also distinguished.

The most famous bass in the world Fyodor Chaliapin. Widely famous and Evgeny Nesterenko, who, unfortunately, is not currently singing on stage.

Bass is an extremely expressive and rich voice, unfortunately, there are not so many singers, as well as parts. The part of Bartolo in Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Kochubey from Tchaikovsky's Mazepa, Ruslan in M. Glinka's opera Ruslan and Lyudmila were written for bass.

The voice of each person is unique in its sound and features. If we talk about the characteristics of singing voices, then here the distinctive features are: timbre, range, height of disclosure and individuality.

How to determine the type of voice? The classification of male and female voices according to vocal characteristics, which exists today, was invented in the Italian opera school. It is not difficult to find out what type of voice the performer has while listening. Experts pay attention to its timbre, tonality, features and tessitura, and then draw a conclusion.

Timbre

The timbre of the voice is called its individual coloring and brightness. The voice may sound rich or soft, the coloring may be dark or light. Teachers distinguish the following types of voice timbre: sharp and soft, chest, head, mixed.

A vocalist who has a soft and pleasant timbre to the ear will be more in demand than one who has a harsh and repulsive manner of singing. In fact, it depends on the timbre of the voice whether a person can practice vocals.

The timbre of each of us is unique, so we can easily identify the sounding voice of one of our favorite singers due to its individual characteristics.

About tonality

It is worth considering that in each work the voice may sound differently, so it is better to sing in your working range. We, in turn, call them the range of notes to which the vocalist is able to give a beautiful color and high-quality sound. Here we are not talking about the full range of notes that a person can hit with his voice. So, based on the working range, it is worth choosing the key for a particular work.

What is a range?

The range of each type of voice is determined during singing, as well as in the process of performing a song in a key that is convenient for a person. In most cases, singing voices have a specific range, thanks to which it is easy to determine its type. Particularly appreciated are performers who have a wide working range and can therefore replace one of their colleagues with a different voice.

About tessitura

A tessitura is a part of the range in which the singer is comfortable singing. That is, it can be comfortable or uncomfortable for a certain voice. It happens that a song can be comfortable for one performer, but not for another, although both have the same range. This means that they have different parts of the range for comfortable singing. Therefore, the wider it is, the more convenient it is to sing.

Moreover, the performer must learn the correct technique of singing. The wrong one distorts the voice. To make it sound beautiful and convincing, you need to pay attention to the following technical features:

  • You should breathe with the diaphragm, that is, the stomach should rise when you inhale, and fall when you exhale. This will give you more control over
  • Maintain correct posture while singing. It is better to keep the neck straight and relaxed. If you stand up straight, it will be easier to breathe.
  • The back of the throat should be open while singing, sing the vowels clearly.

Any person can put his singing technique. If we talk about vocal technique, then development will depend on the presence of concentration of memory and attention, lung capacity and characteristics of the vocal cords. In fact, no matter what a person’s physiological characteristics and vocal data are, it is possible to develop a singing voice.

For voice development

  • Do not set too high standards for yourself in anticipation of progress, be patient and continue to train your voice.
  • Sing simple songs first, and then take on more complex ones.
  • Cold and hot drinks harm the vocal cords. It is better to drink water at room temperature, and when you sing, moisten your throat with warm water from time to time.
  • Feel what you are performing, try to feel and convey the emotions of this song.
  • It is important to determine which musical style is more native to you, for this practice singing different styles of music.
  • It is good for the ear to play notes on the piano and sing along.
  • Avoid orange juice and milk drinks as they coat your throat and make it difficult to sing.
  • Speak in your normal intonation, as both whispering and shouting can harm your vocal cords.

Characteristics of female voice types

First, consider the types of female voices. Most female vocalists have a soprano voice. By the way, it is he who has the largest number of varieties. It has a sonorous and transparent character, as well as expressiveness, the sound is open and light.

There are dramatic, lyric and coloratura soprano.

The mezzo-soprano is known for its rich sound and deep timbre. The sound of such a voice is lower than that of a soprano. This voice can also be dramatic or lyrical.

Main types of male voices

If we talk about the baritone, then this is a heavier type of voice than the tenor. It has a bright and strong sound in the upper part of the range. Baritones are lyrical and dramatic.

Some misconceptions about the classification of voices by type

Some researchers are of the opinion that supposedly there are no types of voice at all, and only female and male are distinguished. They believe that the sound of the voice depends only on the specific features of the methods and performances, in other words, any woman can be a contralto, a mezzo-soprano, and a soprano.

However, the vocal data of many performers confirm the absurdity of these statements. Only in very rare cases can a person have special vocal abilities that allow him to sing with different types of voices. In most cases, the performer cannot overcome differences in tessitura, such as thirds. Moreover, a tessitura too high or too low by only one tone can harm the voice.

Let's mention other misconceptions regarding voice types. There is an opinion that pop singers do not need to determine the type of voice, and that they are classified only for academic singing. But such an opinion differs from reality, since the types of human voice are divided by nature into three female and three male.

In addition, some confuse the timbre and type of voice, although these are completely different terms. Voice type refers to pitch features, and timbre varieties do not play a special role in such a delicate matter as determining the type of voice. Individual timbre indicators are important for choosing your singing style, and for marking the artistic characteristics of the voice. So, voice types are its pitch indicators, determined using the scale of the scale.

About the features of the voice

The human voice cannot be replaced by any of the musical instruments known to us, nor by the voice of any other creatures, therefore the human soul reacts very subtly to live singing, receiving promptings for the heart and mind.

In the past, there was an opinion that phoniatry is capable, by examining the size and shape of the Adam's apple, to determine the type of voice of the performer. It was believed that the tenor would have a less noticeable Adam's apple, while the bass had a more prominent one. But after numerous examinations and scientific research, it became clear that the structure of the Adam's apple and larynx does not affect the type of voice in any way. If we talk about ligaments, their structure can play a role, but you need to evaluate the thickness, strength, size and elasticity.

So, there is a specific set of external signs and personal sensations that help determine the type of voice while singing. The human vocal cords are very sensitive and can be damaged quite easily, which can harm the voice or it can disappear altogether.

Since teachers sometimes make mistakes too, it is better not to strain your voice too much during the hearing, for example, by performing a song in a not very comfortable tessitura. If you think someone else's voice is brighter and more expressive than yours, do not forget that each of us has a unique voice, so sing only in your own manner.

Interestingly, when law enforcement agencies are looking for criminals, they are given out by the features of the voice. To search for offenders, special services use specially developed speech identification methods. Thanks to the individual sound, which is called overtones, it is not difficult for us to recognize the voice of one or another familiar person.

In fact, this is an indicator of the mental and emotional state of each person, an expression of our inner strengths. It is thanks to the voice that one can hear fear of the public, depression, delight, hysteria, feel gratitude or hatred.
