Saints Cyril and Methodius - a symbol of enlightenment

Every Russian person, like every Slav in general, holds the name of Slavic teachers equally dear and sacred. Saints Cyril and Methodius became a symbol of enlightenment. And they should serve us as a good example of Christian teaching, which needs to be revived and developed here in Russia.

Life

Saints Equal to the Apostles Cyril and Methodius, Slovenian teachers, came from a noble and pious family that lived in the Greek city of Thessaloniki. Saint Methodius (in the world Michael) was the eldest of seven brothers, Saint Cyril (in the world Constantine) was the youngest.

Before becoming a monk, Michael made a good military-administrative career, culminating in the post of strategos of Slavinia, a province in Macedonia. Having stayed there for about 10 years, Saint Methodius became a monk in one of the monasteries on Mount Olympus.

From an early age, Constantine was distinguished by great abilities and studied together with the young Byzantine Emperor Michael III from the best teachers of Constantinople, including Photius, the future patriarch. The saint perfectly comprehended all the sciences of his time and many languages. For his intelligence and outstanding knowledge, Constantine received the nickname Philosopher (wise). At the end of his studies, the saint accepted the rank of priest and was appointed keeper of the patriarchal library at the Church of St. Sophia. However, he soon left the capital and secretly went to a monastery. They found him and brought him back, appointing him as a teacher of philosophy at the higher school of Constantinople.

The wisdom and strength of faith of the still very young Constantine were so great that he managed to defeat the leader of the iconoclast heretics, Annius, in a debate. Then Emperor Michael III sent his friend to a debate about the Holy Trinity with the Saracens (Muslims). And again the saint emerged victorious.

At the call of the emperor, the brothers left the monastery and went to preach the gospel to the Khazars. On the way, they stopped in the city of Korsun, where they miraculously found the relics of the Holy Martyr Clement, Pope of Rome. There, in Korsun, Saint Constantine found the Gospel and the Psalter, written in “Russian letters,” and began to learn to read and speak this language.

Soon, ambassadors came from the Moravian prince Rostislav to the Byzantine emperor with a request to send teachers to Moravia who could preach in the native language of the Slavs. Michael III called Constantine and told him: “You need to go there, because no one will do this better than you.” The saint, with fasting and prayer, began a new feat. With the help of his brother Methodius and his disciples Gorazd, Clement, Savva, Naum and Angelar, he compiled the Slavic alphabet and translated into Slavic the books without which the Divine service could not be performed: the Gospel, the Apostle, the Psalter and selected services. This was in 863.

After some time, the brothers decided to go to Rome, taking with them the relics of St. Clement, Pope of Rome. Pope Adrian greeted the scientists with honor and approved worship in the Slavic language, and ordered the books translated by the brothers to be placed in Roman churches and the liturgy to be performed in the Slavic language.

While in Rome, Saint Constantine fell ill and, informed by the Lord in a miraculous vision of his approaching death, he took the schema with the name Cyril. 50 days after accepting the schema, on February 14, 869, Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril died at the age of 42. The saint commanded his brother Methodius to continue their common cause - the enlightenment of the Slavic peoples.

Saint Methodius begged the Pope to allow his brother’s body to be taken away for burial in his native land, but the Pope ordered the relics of Saint Cyril to be placed in the Church of Saint Clement, where miracles began to be performed from them.

After the death of Saint Cyril, the pope, following the request of the Slavic prince Kocel, sent the teacher Methodius to Pannonia, having first ordained him archbishop of Moravia and Pannonia. The saint suffered many persecutions from the German bishops, but each time his truth turned out to be stronger than the enemy’s machinations.

In the last years of his life, Saint Methodius, with the help of two disciple-priests, translated the entire Old Testament into Slavic, except for the Maccabean books, as well as the Rules of the Holy Fathers and the patristic books (Paterikon).

The saint predicted the day of his death and died on April 6, 885 at the age of about 60 years. The funeral service for the saint was performed in three languages - Slavic, Greek and Latin. He was buried in the cathedral church of Velehrad.

Heritage

Saints Cyril and Methodius developed a special alphabet for writing texts in the Slavic language - the Glagolitic alphabet. Currently, among historians, the point of view of V. A. Istrin prevails, but is not generally recognized, according to which the Cyrillic alphabet, which is used today by Bulgarians, Serbs, Macedonians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Russians, as well as numerous non-Slavic peoples, was created by the disciple of the saints brothers Clement of Ohrid (which is also mentioned in his life). Cyril and Methodius created a language now called Church Slavonic and translated the Holy Scriptures and liturgical books into it.

Reverence

Saints are revered both in the East and in the West. In the Russian Orthodox Church, the days of remembrance of the saints are: Cyril - February 27, Methodius - April 19.

In 1863, the Russian Holy Governing Synod established the celebration of both saints annually on May 24 “in memory of the completion of the millennium from the initial sanctification of our Russian language by the Gospel and faith of Christ.”
