Everyone knows what roses mean. Did you know that the color of roses is also very important and can either make a surprise or, conversely, ruin a relationship? And other flowers can say a lot.

The custom of giving flowers is always gallant and romantic. For those who are shy or unsure of themselves, giving a bouquet is the easiest way to express your feelings.

Ancient myths, biblical stories and legends - in all of them you can find words about the meaning of flowers. At the beginning of the 18th century, King Charles II of Sweden introduced a new language to Europe, having visited Persia and learned the eastern “language of flowers.” Floral dictionaries were published throughout the 18th century, telling the secrets of lilies and lilacs, and individual chapters were devoted to arranging bouquets.

The more popular a flower is, the more meanings it has. The greatest burden falls, of course, on the roses.

Some would say we've long since moved on from Victorian days - email makes it as easy to woo a loved one miles away as if they were in the same room. But, on the other hand, it seems that we have lost contact with the earth.

The only flower whose meaning is always clear today is the rose. Yes, communication with the whole world has expanded globally, but the choice of flowers that are given has been reduced to almost one flower.

So, if you want to tell someone else how you feel, expand your freedom to choose from a large number of meaningful bouquets. After all, flowers are much more than just an email, and they look much more beautiful on the table.

Roses deserve the title of the oldest flowers grown by humans; they grew 5,000 years ago in gardens in the East. The wild rose is much older - the remains of roses date back to the appearance of 35 million years ago. Roses are now sold in the millions, which shows that this beautiful flower has truly stood the test of time.

The ancients explain the beauty of the rose by the fact that it was created by the gods. The Greek goddess Cloris accidentally stumbled upon a dead nymph and turned her into a flower, Aphrodite added beauty, brightness, joy and charm. Dionysus filled it with fragrant nectar, and the western wind Zephyr swelled the clouds so that Apollo could water the rose in the sunlight. The flower was then named the “Queen of Flowers” and given to the god of love, Eros.

The Romans had their own ideas about the origin of the rose. According to their legend, there lived a beautiful girl named Rodanthe. She had many fans, but she didn't like them. These young people were so full of love and desire that one day it came to the point that they broke down the doors of her house and rushed inside. This story greatly angered the goddess Diana, who turned the girl into a flower and her fans into thorns to teach them a lesson.

Whatever the origin of the rose, this flower is undoubtedly the most famous symbol of beauty and love.

Each of us remembers that the different colors of roses symbolize certain feelings that we experience for the one to whom we give them. However, there are so many interpretations of rose colors that it is very difficult to remember them the first time.

The red rose is a symbol of love and passion. However, if you give it to a subordinate or business partner, then it expresses approval of a job well done or respect.

A dark burgundy rose is a rose that is customary to give to representatives of the older generation. This is the color of “unconscious” but unfading beauty.

A pink flower is a traditional gift for a young girl. It denotes youth and its inherent modesty.

In addition, it symbolizes trust, tenderness and grace. Giving such a flower to a girl who attracts you means starting a relationship between you and hinting about your feelings.

However, pink can have another meaning, depending on the color saturation. So, dark pink means gratitude and appreciation, and light pink means sympathy and admiration.

You can safely present a white rose to a very young lady. But creamy white is the color of a wedding bouquet. It symbolizes happy love.

An orange or coral rose is a great way to express enthusiasm and desire for a goal.

A tea rose will also tell you about your romantic feelings, a musky rose will express your admiration, and a centifolia rose is another way to confess your love.

All light roses usually symbolize friendship.

Roses in buds, given in a bouquet, symbolize beginning, innocent love. The buds of red and pink roses say: "You are young and beautiful", unbloomed white roses mean: "You are too young for love."

For the first declaration of love, use light green roses.
If two buds are attached to a blooming rose, then some kind of secret must be seen in this message.

Two roses tied together are an invitation to a date, and they also mean anticipation of marriage.
Roses in the form of a wreath are a symbol of chastity. Since ancient times, rose wreaths at weddings have symbolized purity.
Rose foliage signifies hope and optimism.

The number of roses in the language of flowers also plays an important role. Thus, a single rose is a symbol of modesty; One red rose is a well-known way of declaring love. To invite someone on a fun date, a red rose is given in a bouquet, usually accompanied by two yellow roses.

The combination of white and red flowers in a bouquet signifies your agreement and unanimity. The combination of red and yellow is your sincere “Congratulations!” A rose in full bloom with two buds exudes mystery.

If the roses have leaves, then this is a symbol of reliability; if you tear them off, then the bouquet will say that, alas, there is no more hope.

But if you cut off the thorns, you will assure the person to whom you are giving the bouquet that he has nothing to be afraid of around you.

Postcards from the artist Catherine Klein (1861 - 1929)

Receiving bouquets of flowers is as pleasant as giving them. What about making bouquets? In the past, people used flowers to convey entire messages that they could not or did not dare to express in words. In the old days, bouquets were formed in strict accordance with the language of flowers.

P.A. Vyazemsky
"Flowers"
By type, person and year
I have flowers in my garden:
I give lily to innocence,
Poppy - to sleepy, sugary husbands,
Lily of the valley
To the friends of the humble poor Liza,
Narcissus is unhappy and pale -
Handsome people who are busy with themselves.
Evil newswomen and talkers
I greet you with a bell;
In the shadows I hide from view
For a sweet rose without thorns.

The language of flowers originated in the East. It was with the help of flowers that oriental beauties talked about their mood and feelings. Europe learned about this amazing language only in the 18th century after the letters of the wife of the British ambassador in Istanbul, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, were published in 1763. Starting from the end of the 18th and throughout the 19th century, “Flower Dictionaries” were published in various European countries with a detailed explanation of the meaning and meaning of a particular flower or plant. Ancient flower dictionaries described a huge number of plants and flowers, sometimes more than 300 names. Here are some of them:

Flowers - symbols

  • Acacia - friendship, pure love
  • Astra - grace, sophistication
  • Hawthorn – courage and hope
  • Cornflowers – trust, simplicity and undemandingness
  • Geranium - external shine, without internal dignity
  • Carnation - courage, bravery
  • Gladiolus - willingness to sacrifice oneself for the sake of one’s beloved
  • Jasmine – sensuality, passion, first love languor
  • Bell - cuteness
  • Lily of the valley – innocence and purity of morals, a symbol of virginity, modesty, tenderness
  • Linen - simplicity
  • Lily – virginity, beauty, royalty
  • Daisy – truth and modesty
  • Terry poppy - a hint of reverie, dreams, a symbol of sleep, relaxation and laziness
  • Narcissist - self-adoration
  • Hazel - heartfelt melancholy
  • Ivy - friendship
  • Mignonette – kindness of the heart
  • Rye - prosperity, wealth
  • Rose – beauty and love
  • Chamomile – peace, tranquility
  • Lilac – (lilac) first love, (white) innocence
  • Tulip is a symbol of great happiness and pure love, harmony
  • Violet – innocence and secrecy

Symbol colors

Attention was also paid to the color of flowers, the presence of thorns and even the condition of the flower itself. So, for example, a rosebud meant a young innocent girl who had not yet known the joy of love, and a withered rose was a symbol of lost youth, joy, happiness and beauty, and sometimes even early death.

  • Pink – love
  • Bright red – passion
  • Green – hope
  • Light blue – faith
  • Blue – loyalty and devotion
  • Dull yellow – deceit and envy
  • Light gray – poverty
  • Dark gray - despair
  • Lilac – submissiveness
  • Purple – friendship
  • Orange – pride and coquetry
  • Golden – dignity
  • Silver – immortality

These rules also applied to artificial flowers that were used to decorate clothes and hats. For example, for the bride’s wreath and bouquet, myrtle and orange/orange flowers were recommended, which symbolized the purity and innocence of the bride. It was considered bad form if a young unmarried girl decorated herself with bright red flowers.

Love messages in flowers

There were times when the presence of a lady's lover did not bother anyone, but on the contrary confirmed her popularity. The letter, like the diaries, was considered unreliable, as they could end up in the wrong hands and become public knowledge. That's why many famous people simply burned their letters and diaries. If love correspondence was kept, then the rule of good manners in the event of a breakup was to return the letters.
Flowers or a flower were more reliable and practical in this regard. Then it was easier to save a flower that had meaning for the lovers. It was taken out of the bouquet (if there was a bouquet, because small bouquets could be preserved entirely) and dried, and then put into a book, box, or other secret place.
It was extremely important, and special attention was paid to this in the past: by whom and when the flowers were presented, how the giver holds the bouquet, in which hand and how he hands it to the recipient (with the inflorescences up or down), what flowers the bouquet consists of; and on the details: is the bouquet fresh or fading, whether the thorns have been removed from the stems.
The language of flowers was not unambiguous, much less strict. The same flower in different countries and classes could be endowed with different meanings. It was also popular for lovers to come up with their own flower language that only they could understand. And then the secret did not become apparent...

Insult with flowers

In the gallant age and later in the 19th century, the language of flowers was widely used in European courts and salons. But those who think that the language of flowers (and fans) were used as a language for conversation are mistaken. I mean the language itself, which we use in the everyday act of communication, and not the parlor games of those years, where with the help of signs it was actually possible to carry on a conversation, as, for example, the deaf and dumb use sign language, with the help of which they actually talk to each other .
The language of flowers was important and necessary for conveying feelings, mood, degree of love, respect, and so on. Moreover, knowing the language of flowers was a social necessity, since “... this gives every opportunity to be ready to dull the sting of ridicule and in time to repel the vulgar trick of the wit who<…>would have thought of bringing you a bouquet of flowers, the meaning of which would not be at all consistent with either your age or your dignity, or contained a clear hint of something offensive to you” (“Social Life and Etiquette”, 1901)
That is, to give a bouquet to a married lady that contained orange flowers - a symbol of innocence - would be insulting, but precisely because of its meaning, fleur-d-orange was the main flower in the bouquet of brides of those years. By the way, this tradition has remained in aristocratic and royal houses: young brides come with a bouquet of orange flowers.
In the everyday life of ordinary people, there also remains some idea of the symbolism of flowers, but it is less profound, not always appropriate and has lost connection with the connotations of our ancestors. Oh, those red roses! So a guy can give a girl red roses and the girl will be happy with them both because it is a bright symbol and because roses are expensive these days! But she doesn't consider the symbolic catch of the thorns. In the past, red roses were inappropriate, and white lilies were preferred as a gift to your beloved. Despite the variety, bouquets have become monotonous these days. Who will give you a bouquet of violets or forget-me-nots today? And before it was commonplace.

Alexander's bouquets

A well-known historical example of the language of flowers as a symbol of veneration is the so-called Alexander bouquets in honor of the Russian Emperor Alexander I. These were large and small bouquets. The large ones were fastened to the bodice or inserted into portobouquets, and the small ones were worn in the hair. The initial letters of the names created from flowers formed the name of Emperor Alexander, i.e. Anemon (anemone), Lilie (lily), Eicheln (acorns), Xeranthenum (amaranth), Accazzie (acacia), Nelke (carnation), Dreifaltigkeitsblume (cheerful eyes) , i.e. pansies), Epheu (ivy) and Roze (rose).
Such bouquets were very popular both in Russia and Europe, especially after the victory over Napoleon. European aristocrats could not appear in society without these bouquets: it was their duty to decorate their toilet with symbolic flowers, so they came with them to the opera, ball and other social gatherings, including, first of all, those that were held in the presence of His Majesty.
Similar bouquets according to the letters of their names were arranged by loving couples and worn by brides. A gentleman in love could send such a bouquet to the lady of his heart before a ball or theater, and the lady, as a sign of acceptance of the courtship, would insert such a bouquet into her porta bouquet or, as a sign of refusal, simply ignore it and come with another bouquet.

The language of flowers appeared in the East, in particular in Turkey. In this country there was a system that made it possible to reproduce a poetic line that spoke of feelings using one word. Plants were often used as keywords. The system was called selam. It became the basis for the emergence of the “language of flowers” in European culture, which was very popular at the end of the 19th century. Skills in such a language began to fade by the middle of the 19th century. In our country, a surge of interest in entertaining floral cryptography arose relatively recently - at the end of the 20th century. Therefore, it is worth returning to the original sources - the books that served as reference books on the language of flowers at the beginning of the 19th century.

Floral language, like any other, has changed over time and adapted to the conditions in which it was used - after all, each locality has its own favorite flowers. Sometimes the symbolism of the flower changed and did not coincide with its original eastern interpretation. For example, phlox had two interpretations - it could mean submission and consent, but at the same time it was a symbol of fiery passion.

- a science that reveals the meaning and symbolism of various flowers and plants. Simply put, it is the language of flowers, with the help of which they express ideas, feelings, and moods.

During the Victorian era, the language of flowers was very helpful in cases where feelings could not be spoken openly, but required secret expression. Floral arrangements were created from fresh flowers (plants), wreaths, bouquets, and multi-colored objects or painted objects were used. Not only flowers were involved in the language, but also their arrangement, even the tilt of the flower mattered.

These flower dictionaries have come to us; they tell in detail about the meaning of many plants.

In Russia, the popularization of the language of flowers is associated with the name of the poet and translator Dmitry Petrovich Oznobishin, who published the Persian book “Selam, or the Language of Flowers” that he translated into Russian. This book described more than 400 plants, each of which had a specific word or phrase. The book was quite popular, of course, primarily among young people.

Nowadays, when giving a bouquet that carries such a message in the language of flowers, you risk remaining misunderstood. Perhaps you should include a short “flower phrase book” with your bouquet? It is believed that the number of flowers in a bouquet has a certain meaning: one flower is a sign of attention, three is respect, five is recognition, seven is love...

The most important thing to be guided by when choosing flowers is, of course, the tastes of the person for whom you are choosing a bouquet. How to recognize them? Give flowers more often, and sooner or later, you will definitely hit the mark!

Everyone knows what roses mean. Did you know that the color of roses is also very important and can either make a surprise or, conversely, ruin a relationship?

A dark burgundy rose is a rose that is usually given to representatives of the older generation.

It is a mistake to think that yellow roses have a negative interpretation. In fact, yellow is the color of friendship and joy. These flowers look great in any floral arrangement.
