Henrikh Veniaminovich was not distinguished by good health. The heart has been naughty for a long time. Genrikh Sapgir was born in Biysk, Altai. This fact is no less original than his work. He often jokingly said: "There are Jews of Bukhara, Siberian, but Altai - I'm probably the only one." It so happened that in 1928, Sapgir's parents, who had previously lived in the famous Vitebsk, ended up on a long business trip in Biysk. It was there, in this center of Altai, that Henry was born. Soon, after the birth of little Heinrich, my mother went with him to Moscow, and the rest of his life passed - with departures, departures - in this city. But both in Vitebsk and in Moscow, Henry's parents spoke Yiddish, and this language has always remained in his memory: Hebrew words, phrases, sayings often interspersed with Russians in his speech.

For the first time, the noise around the name of Sapgir arose when the famous literary anthology "Metropol" (1979) appeared. In it, along with the poems of E. Evtushenko, A. Voznesensky, were published the poems of G. Sapgir and E. Rein. Then he and Rein got away with it - against the background of celebrities, their names were not honored. But, at the same time, the collection "Metropol" marked the first publication of "adult" poems by Sapgir in the USSR.

The first book of children's poems by G. Sapgir was published in the USSR in 1960, the second - already solid, "Selected", was published in 1993 in Moscow. This book became evidence that the master entered Russian literature. Who is he? Poet? A prose writer? Experimenter writing for the prepared reader? One thing was clear - the name of Genrikh Sapgir burst into Russian literature firmly and for a long time.

My acquaintance with Henrikh Veniaminovich took place on the phone, in the fall of 1991 he called me. I remember his voice, accent in particular. It seemed to me somewhat shtetl-Jewish. But this is by phone. In life, both the voice and the accent were completely different. Why did you call me at home? I was glad that in my book I mentioned the name of his beloved poet and friend Ovsei Ovseevich Driza. At that time, I not only did not know him personally, but I was not familiar with his work, except for translations from Ovsey Driz.

In recent years, we have met often and talked for a long time. I remember the meeting at the end of December 1995 at the anniversary of Yevgeny Borisovich Rein. Genrikh Veniaminovich recited poetry. I immediately realized that these poems have something to do with the hero of the day, however, as with most true poets. Sapgir published them in full in his book "Flying and Sleeping", dedicating them to Eugene Rein and entitled "Without a name".

Heinrich Sapgir is an amazing storyteller. Perhaps, of the people with whom I met, only Eugene Rein could "compete" with him in this skill. Once Heinrich in a taxi forgot a folder with other people's manuscripts, which he was given to read. Rising home and ringing the doorbell, he remembered the forgotten and immediately rushed downstairs in the hope of returning the papers. Of course, that taxi was no longer there, but he got into another and caught up with the manuscripts "not far from his house, near the Novoslobodskaya metro station. Fortunately, there was a traffic jam." Not having settled with the "new" driver, he generously thanked the first taxi driver, and when he came home, he remembered that he had offended his savior. Fortunately, he remembered the number of the car. He had to find the person he needed through a taxi company in order to settle accounts with him. And so he did.

In one of our conversations, Henry said: "Ask me any questions you want. You will find the answers to any of your questions in my books. I think I gave you my last book. Now let's raise another koisu (glass - Hebrew)." ...

If Sapgir had translated only Driz's "Cholem Wise Men", making them a part of Russian literature, then this alone would have been enough to attribute him to Russian-Jewish writers. But he also wrote wonderful verses on biblical subjects, in particular "Psalms of David" and "Three Hebrew Lessons".

Heinrich Sapgir translated several dozen of Driza's poems. Their creative community was a continuation of a personal friendship. Distant in age (Henry was twenty years younger than Ovsei), who received various upbringing (Ovsey Driz, who grew up in the town of "Krasnoe" in Podolia, who knew Jewish traditions and Yiddish from childhood, Henry, as already mentioned, grew up in Moscow), they supported each other in good and bad times. Driz's poems have not been published in their native language for a long time, since 1934. But in 1959 his collection "The Merry Baker" was published in Russian. It contained many translations of G. Sapgir, however, as well as in the following collections by Driz "Top of Summer" (1961), "The tree has arrived (1966).

What united these two different people the most? Love for children, for their imagination; belief in the reality of fantasy and, of course, humor. G. Sapgir called O. Driz "the main pioneer of the country", because Ovsey's birthday - May 19 - coincided with the birthday of the pioneer organization named after. V.I. Lenin. Born November 20, 1928 into a Jewish family in Biysk, Altai Territory, the son of a Moscow engineer who was on a business trip in Altai and soon returned with his family to Moscow.
Since 1944, he has been a member of the literary studio of the poet and artist Yevgeny Kropivnitsky at the House of Pioneers of the Leningradsky District of Moscow. Since the late 1950s, a close circle of aesthetically close poets and artists has formed around Kropivnitsky and his student, artist Oskar Rabin, which later became known as the "Lianozovo school" (Rabin lived not far from the Lianozovo station near Moscow).
In the Soviet years, Sapgir was published a lot as a children's writer (he wrote the scripts for the animated films "The Little Engine from Romashkov", "Losharik", "My Green Crocodile", "The Frog Is Looking for Daddy" and others, the words to the song "Green Carriage" (translated from Yiddish, poems by Ovsey Driza) and others).
In 1979 he participated in the Metropol almanac. The first publication of Sapgir's "adult" poems abroad was in 1965, in the USSR - only in 1989. He also acted as a translator. The compiler of the poetic section of the anthology "Samizdat of the Century" (1998), on the basis of which the Internet project "Unofficial Poetry" was created.
He died of a heart attack in a Moscow trolleybus on his way to the presentation of the anthology Poetry of Silence, where he was supposed to speak. ("Trolleybus flight to heaven", - line in the text of Heinrich Sapgir "Strange border", 1999).

For Sapgir, children's literature became a fabulous island, to which he was exiled by adult literature and hostile Soviet reality. He himself said that he would never have guessed to write for children, if not for the need to earn a living. Sapgir belonged to the famous "Lianozovo" group of writers, which consisted of bright personalities, rebels against dullness, innovators, brilliant stylists. At home, it was not published for a long time, after the first publication of poems took place abroad, they were expelled from the Writers' Union. He returned to adult literature only in the late 80s.
But children's literature - his wonderful emigration - became richer for a whole page of its history, so great is Sapgir's role in it. He left a large legacy. The main thing in it is the poems that Sapgir began to write in childhood (one of them was even published in Pionerskaya Pravda). In 1960, his first children's book, "First Acquaintance", appeared. Then several collections were published, the poems of which became classics: "Laughing men" ("Laughing people lived in the land of Laughter. The laughing people loved fun and dancing ..."), "The Ogre and the Princess" ("The princess was beautiful, the weather was terrible ... ").
Sapgir is a wonderful translator of poems by Ovsey Driz, A.A. Miln. Translations of Milne's poems "Winnie the Pooh and Me" add new colors to our perception of the funny bear cub and his friend Christopher Robin. In co-authorship with another "famous unknown", an excellent writer Gennady Tsyferov, Sapgir wrote scripts for the cartoons "Losharik", "Locomotive from Romashkov", "My green crocodile", "The frog is looking for daddy." He also wrote plays that have been shown in children's theaters in our country and abroad for many years.
