Передати мова іншої людини можливо двома різними способами: процитувати або передати своїми словами. Цитування слів іншої людини називається прямою мовою, передача своїми словами - промовою непрямої. При використанні непрямої мови в англійській мові існує кілька правил, мова про які піде нижче.

Непряма мова в англійській мові погодить час використовуваних дієслів у другорядному пропозиції з дієсловами, використовуваними в головній частині пропозиції. Якщо ми вживаємо в головному реченні дієслова, поставлені в Present або Future, форма дієслова в залежному залишається незмінною. Якщо ж ми маємо справу в пріоритетному пропозиції з дієсловом, вжитим в часі Past, то в підрядному реченні все дієслова вживаються також в часі Past.

She says that the cleaning is finished. / Вона каже, що прибирання завершена.

He will want to watch what you have written. / Він захоче бачити, що ви написали.

She wanted to know what you had bought. / Вона хотіла знати, що ви придбали.

Якщо необхідно вжити модальнідієслова в непрямій мові, варто дотримуватися правила про те, що модальне дієслово, розташований в підрядному реченні повинен бути вжитий в тому самому часі, що дієслово-присудок в головному.

1. My mother told me to put on my coat.

   Якщо пряма мова виражає наказ, то дієслово to say змінюється на дієслово to tell. Наказовий спосіб замінюється в непрямій мові інфінітивом (дієслово з часткою to).

2. My friend told us not to come that day.

   Якщо пряма мова виражає наказ, то дієслово to say змінюється на дієслово to tell. Негативна форма наказового способу замінюється інфінітивом з часткою not. Today змінюється на that day.

3. He told Mary not to forget to send him an e-mail.

   Якщо пряма мова виражає наказ, то дієслово to say змінюється на дієслово to tell. Негативна форма наказового способу замінюється інфінітивом з часткою not.

4. Karrie told me to call her the next day.

   Якщо пряма мова виражає наказ, то дієслово to say змінюється на дієслово to tell. Наказовий спосіб замінюється в непрямій мові інфінітивом (дієслово з часткою to). Tomorrow змінюється на the next day.

5. She told me not to shout at her.

   Якщо пряма мова виражає наказ, то дієслово to say змінюється на дієслово to tell. Негативна форма наказового способу замінюється інфінітивом з часткою not.

Завдання 2.

Після дієслова to tell завжди слід непряме доповнення, що позначає особу, до якої адресовано прохання або наказ - told her.

say said

Непрямого доповнення, що позначає особу, до якої адресовано прохання або наказ, немає. Тому вживання дієслова to tell виключено.

tell

Після дієслова to tell завжди слід непряме доповнення, що позначає особу, до якої адресовано прохання або наказ - tell us.

said

Непрямого доповнення, що позначає особу, до якої адресовано прохання або наказ, немає. Тому вживання дієслова to tell виключено.

Завдання 3.

1. She asked John when he was going to come.

   Present Simple змінюється на Past Simple (are going -\u003e was going). Запитальний порядок слів замінюється порядком слів оповідного пропозиції.

2. He asked her who was her favourite actor.

   Present Simple змінюється на Past Simple (is -\u003e was). У цьому реченні "Who is your favourite actor?" питального порядку слів немає спочатку, так як це питання до підмета. У непрямій мові також зберігається порядок слів оповідного пропозиції.

3. A man asked me if I had a car.

   Present Simple змінюється на Past Simple (have -\u003e had). Загальні питання переводяться в непряму мову за допомогою союзів if / whether. Запитальний порядок слів замінюється порядком слів оповідного пропозиції.

4. My father asked me where I had been the day before.

   Past Simple змінюється на Past Perfect (were -\u003e had been). Запитальний порядок слів замінюється порядком слів оповідного пропозиції. Yesterday змінюється на the day before.

5. Helen asked him if he would be at home.

   Future Simple змінюється на Future in the Past (will be -\u003e would be). Загальні питання переводяться в непряму мову за допомогою союзів if / whether. Запитальний порядок слів замінюється порядком слів оповідного пропозиції.

Завдання 4.

1. He said that he could drive a car.

   У непрямій мові can змінюється на could.

2. She told me that I ought to call her.

   Якщо після to say є доповнення, що позначає особу, до якої звертаються з промовою (to me), то say замінюється tell. Дієслово ought в непрямій мові не змінюється.

Дуже часто в мові нам потрібно передати чиїсь слова (хтось щось сказав), і часто ми це робимо своїми власними словами, уникаючи прямої мови. Як ми це робимо? Дуже просто, ми перетворюємо її в підрядне речення.

John said, «I want to get a new job». - Джон сказав: «Я хочу отримати нову роботу».
John said (that) he wanted to get a new job. - Джон сказав, що він хоче отримати нову роботу.

Про те, як це зробити коректно ми і будемо говорити далі.

В англійській мові є ряд особливостей, які слід враховувати при зміні прямої мови в непряму.

Для того щоб перевести пряму мову в непряму, потрібно опустити кому після слів, що вводять пряму мову, і лапки. Часто непряма мова в англійській мові вводиться союзом that, Який, втім, може бути опущений (саме тому ми поставили слово that в дужки в прикладі вище).

Ви повинні були звернути увагу, що у нас змінилася тимчасова категорія ( I want на I wanted), Подібне явище в англійській мові називається узгодження часів (Це залежність часу дієслова в підрядному реченні від часу дієслова в головному).

У таблиці нижче Ви зможете побачити всі випадки подібних трансформацій.

Якщо присудок головного речення стоїть в сьогоденні або майбутньому часу, то присудок придаткового буде стояти в тому самому часі, яке було в прямій мові.

Трохи складніша ситуація, якщо присудок головного речення стоїть в минулому часу, тут як раз і вступає в силу ті самі правила узгодження часів.

Важливо також пам'ятати, що крім самих дієслів при узгодженні часів нам потрібно враховувати і зміна говірок і займенників.

Особисті і присвійні займенники

Olga said, « I will give you back your book ». - Ольга сказала: «Я віддам тобі твою книгу».
Olga said (that) she would give me back my book. - Ольга сказала, що вона віддасть мені мою книгу.

ви не можете сказати:

you back your book. - Ольга сказала мені, що вона віддасть тобі твою книгу.

а, як і в російській, Ви скажете:

Olga said that she would give me back my book. - Ольга віддасть мені мою книгу.

Вказівні займенники і прислівники часу і місця

Питання в прямій мові

питання в непрямій мові мають структуру розповідного речення, тобто прямий порядок слів (Підмет, за ним присудок)

Знак питання в кінці такої пропозиції відсутній, допоміжне дієслово to do в Present і Past Indefinite не вживається.
