About cons

Nothing is perfect in the world, so you can talk about small flaws in the vocabulary.

Previously, the database was only replenished with verified data. Now ordinary users have got the opportunity to replenish the database. Among these "ordinary" there are jokers and trolls, or even just illiterate citizens. So don't trust all the data unconditionally.

In any case, errors are exceptions, not rules.

A free grading system is applied. This does not guarantee that all data must be unconditionally trusted, but it still makes sense to focus on the rating.

Learn all distortion of English language hard. But you can. But learning Russian for a foreigner is much harder than learning English. Therefore, we will not be angry with the English speakers for all their distortions, but rather we will immerse ourselves with interest in the real, modern, alive English!

Urban Dictionary - interactive dictionary modern slang English, where you can find definitions and examples of the use of neologisms, youth jargon and memes. The vocabulary is ironic and often obscene, so I would not recommend it for use in the lesson, rather it is suitable for self-education and entertainment.

This is how one of the neutral articles looks like - tattoo remorse.

Urban Dictionary TV is a similar resource. The vocabulary is the same as in Urban Dictionary, and there is the same ironic style of writing definitions, plus each word or expression is illustrated by a video clip. Again, because of a large number obscenities, not all vocabulary materials are suitable for classroom use. But here sometimes quite interesting and informative articles come across. For example, this note about ethnobotanist, philosopher and psychonaut Terrence McKenna:

Terence Kemp McKenna (November 16, 1946 - April 3, 2000) was an Irish-American philosopher, psychonaut, researcher, spiritual teacher, speaker and writer on many subjects; such as human consciousness, psychedelic drugs, the evolution of civilizations, the origin and the end of the universe, cybernetics, alchemy, and extraterrestrial beings.

Urban Dikshinari (urbandictionary.com) - a living, updated dictionary English words and expressions like wikipedia. It is believed that it contains the most slang expressions, but this is questionable. Because the dictionary already contains more than 7 million entries, which is more than words in any English dictionary... How did it happen?

Get your learn on

The site was created by a student at the University of California in 1999 as a parody of an academic dictionary. He looks a bit like Lurk. At first, Urban Dikshinari was filled with a student and his acquaintances, and then the opportunity became available to everyone. Site traffic grew, funds for placement vocabulary entry simplified, and it turned out that there is now more slang (entries in the dictionary) than the English words themselves.

What can be found in Urban Dikshinari now

But is it possible to call everything that is contained there, slang? No. Rather, it is a living, non-academic definition of English words and expressions. Some words are described several times - by different users. Although there is slang in the dictionary. First of all, computer slang, but there are also just neologisms - new words. Now the line between virtuality and reality has been erased, so only curls and squiggles from the keyboard, letter designations of emotions (LOL), and a number of abbreviations (FYI, AKA, TY, ATT, etc.) can be strictly attributed to computer slang.

Cons of the dictionary

About 8 years ago, the dictionary aroused more confidence, since now everyone and everyone is writing there. The situation is somewhat saved by the voting system - users themselves vote for the definition, raising it up or drowning it. You look at the assessment - you draw conclusions yourself. Reading the dictionary is fun, you can learn words that have appeared literally recently and are associated with the most recent events. For those who read English, there is an opportunity to sit and laugh. For example, I will translate the latest slang expressions that are now (August 2016) in the top of the dictionary.

Examples of English slang with translation

The first expression, apparently, is associated with the recent flash mob "No Bra No Problem": an American schoolgirl was made a comment about a bra (or rather, its absence), and off it went: thousands of photos began to fall into the network without this part of the wardrobe. That was the flash mob. And this is the expression that has become popular in the wake of the flash mob:

Let my girls hang - literally "let my girls hang out"

The act of taking your bra off after a long day and letting them be free.- Take off your bra after a long day and free your breasts

I can’t wait to get home from work and let my girls hang- I can't wait to get home from work and "let my girls hang out."

The second expression is related to the spread social networks and various mobile communication applications.

Group Chat Phobia

The phobia of texting in group chats. - fear of writing in group chats

Nick has group chat phobia, so he texts people individually.- Nick has a fear of writing in group chats, he writes to people in a personal.

FYI decoding

Let's consider separately FYI - for your information. This abbreviation is also represented in Urban Dikshinari. She often meets in business correspondence with English-speaking colleagues, and I wondered for a long time what this meant. So this is "For your information." Often these three letters are substituted when forwarding a business letter (in the subject line) to make it clear that they want to keep you informed. But the expression is also found in everyday speech. Here is an example that Urban Dikshinari gives us:

FYI, today is Carol's birthday- for your information, today is Carol's birthday

What does AKA mean

AKA stands for also known as (also known as).

My name is Andrey Ermakov A.K.A. (Also Known As) Ermak. My name is Andrey Ermakov aka (Also Known As) Ermak

Decoding IMHO

IMHO (IMHO) stands for In My Humble Opinion - in my humble opinion. This expression is widely used in Russian correspondence, although it came from the English language. This is an abbreviation. Examples of using IMHO from the Urban Dictionary:

Speaking IMHO, I think everyone should have a job of some sort.
IMHO, you are a looser.
IMHO, this is the best answer.

New words of 2016 in Russian

Popular magazines make a selection of new words every year. And they take them, it seems, from Urban Dikshinari. In the Russian language, neologisms and slang expressions also appear. And yes, English expressions migrate to the Russian language. But the AdMi collection exists, rather, just to laugh. What is presented in it did not take root in the Russian language. Although well-known concepts are presented, they have not yet entered the language.

Like shock
The feeling that arises in a person whose post on social networks has collected much more "Likes" than he expected.

Gloatgram
Instagram post showing how good the life of the author is; usually photographs of food or travel.

Some expressions do not apply to the Internet:

Coffee face
The terrible face of a man who has not yet had time to drink coffee in the morning.

The above examples can be found in the Urban Dictionary, but in English only, no translation.
