Book: John Dee “The Diaries of John Dee. Volume II

The current of Enochian magic appeared in the middle of the 19th century, when occultism and secret societies were at their peak. The basis of Enochian magic is the invocation of angels through prayer, as well as the control of the spirits of nature, in the multitude that dwell everywhere.

In the article:

Enochian magic - a kind of Christian witchcraft

At its core, Enochian magic is a form of angelic magic. It was created (or, as they say, received) by a duet of occultists called John Dee and Edward Kelly... John Dee studied mathematics, alchemy and astrology, and Edward Kelly was a medium.

Prague. Installation in Lesser Town Bridge Tower - Edward Kelly and John Dee

In the diaries of John Dee, a special alphabet was discovered, to which correspondence tables were brought. The alphabet was Enochian, the diaries claimed that all teaching was based on the secrets of the apocryphal relic, which the church ranked among heretical texts - the Book of Enoch.

John Dee sincerely believed that his magic was an offshoot of theology. He believed that a connection with the spirit world is necessary to understand nature, since the world was created by God as a complex system, and spirits and angels are the divine way to reveal their presence. John Dee believed that people are not able to hear God, since he is too large for the weak human mind.

But to comprehend God through angels and spirits, through the secrets of numerology and magic of numbers, using a quasi-mathematical order in counting letters and numbers of angelic and spiritual names is quite possible. John Dee himself was a Catholic, while he was of Kabbalistic origin. However, I did not see any contradiction in this.

Professor Stephen Klukas classified Enochian magic as a religious occult, since in this form the creation of rituals, the establishment of occult relationships and the receipt of the help of higher powers is seen as a divine and spiritual ascent to the heights of being. According to the professor, angelic magic (Enochian) is a prayerful kind of Christian.

John Dee and Edward Kelly - Creators of the Enochian System

Probably the first steps to create a new kind of occult practice were taken by John Dee out of frustration. He was deeply disgusted by the idea of the impossibility of comprehending all natural secrets and solving all the riddles. Therefore, I began to look for ways to receive help from God, angels, spirits, opportunities for communication with these higher entities without harm to yourself and your immortal soul.

In the search, he was assisted by Edward Kelly, a medium, and in the past - a criminal (he was convicted as a counterfeiter). John Dee and Edward Kelly traveled together for six years, from 15383 to 1589, conducting seances and looking for signs of divine manifestations. According to his contemporaries, John was honest and unfaithful in his faith, unlike Kelly, who, most likely, could fool his partner.

Edward Kelly and John Dee argued that the creation of this system was based on the instructions they received from the angels. This was believed by a large number of occultists who practiced such magic. However, others have noted the disturbing and disconcerting similarities between Enochian magic and Peter de Abano's grimoires like Heptameron.

Moreover, John Dee was familiar with this occult work. The fact that Edward Kelly was a counterfeiter and, in general, a man with an unclean reputation added fuel to the fire. Some even believed that the medium was simply fooling the sincerely believing John in order to extort money from him. But the followers of angelic magic, this opinion was actively disputed.

The date of creation of the Enochian system is considered to be March 8, 1582, when Edward was introduced to John. He had a magnificent home library, the fame of which thundered throughout Europe, and therefore various scientists often came to Dee to touch the works he kept and talk. However, John was extremely interested in Edward's talent - the ability of a medium, communicating with the upper world, as well as a clairvoyant. The fruit of the joint work of this duo was the creation of a special direction in magic that still lives today.

Enochian Magic for Beginners

Unlike other occult-magical theories and directions, magic-based remains holistic, refined, sublime and difficult to understand. Even Enochian magic for beginners is not as easy as other works. Unfortunately, the original manuscripts of John were lost due to the fire that occurred after his death. Because of this, key aspects of the theory he created were lost, giving rise to dozens of guesses and attempts to fill in the gaps with their own interpretations.

Enochian magic whose spells were bestowed upon John and Kelly by the angels, has many angelic names, elemental symbols and manifestations. A collection of all the knowledge received by the scientist and the medium was recorded, called the Great Table of Squares or Elementary Boards, which contain all the knowledge available to people about the elements, the creatures of elemental magic, the purpose of their creation, about everything living in the ether, living in water, living in soils, alive in a flame (which is fire, and fire keeps the secret of all living things in the world), about the secrets of stone, mechanisms, transformations, people and other things.

Tison Donald. Genuine angelic magic. Enochian Magic for Beginners

A good place to start learning about such a thing as angelic magic is to study its history, as well as the various written works dedicated to it. Enochian magic, the books of which are often difficult to understand, is well revealed in the work of Tyson Donald, called "The True Magic of Angels." From the perspective of a modern person, she reveals the basics of Enochian magic, discovered back in the sixteenth century.

This magic is the basis for the occult tradition of the entire European world. It combines, allows the call and control of both heavenly messengers and demonic entities. The book reveals the historical way of creating this magic, its tools, the Enochian language and its spells. It is recommended for everyone who wants to learn the intricacies of the magical art.

Undoubtedly, angelic magic is a complex topic, difficult material to study. But even not the smartest person will get knowledge if he spends hours studying the subject of his interest. And, who knows, maybe this particular person is destined to become a great magician in the future.

John Dee, sometimes Diy ( John dee; , Tower Ward, -, Mortlake, London,) -, and, one of the most educated people of his time.

Biography

early years

The only son of Roland Dee, a cloth merchant who also held a minor position at court. Dee's family was of origin; Dee's surname comes from du"black".

Dissatisfied with the scientific atmosphere in England, Dee in - went on a trip to Europe. he arrived at where one of the largest Catholic universities in Europe was located. There, Dee worked in collaboration with Gemma Frizius and. The latter soon became his close friend, Mercator and Dee designed new models together. At Louvain, Dee wrote two treatises on astronomy.

Personal life

Dee was married three times and had eight children. His eldest son, Arthur Dee, also studied alchemy and hermetic philosophy. gives the following description of Dee's appearance: “He was tall and thin. He wore a robe similar to those worn by artists, with sleeves open from the elbow and a long slit. A very clear, ruddy face ... a long milky white beard. A very handsome man. "

Achievements

Worldview

Dee believed that there is a basis and measure of all things in the universe, and that the creation of the world by the Lord was "an act of calculation." From hermetic philosophy, Dee learned that man is potentially capable of gaining divine power; at the same time, he believed that divinity can be achieved through a perfect knowledge of mathematics. For Dee, the exercises in Kabbalah and the summoning of angels (which were based on numerology) and in-depth studies in navigation and other applications of mathematics were not at all conflicting, as we can believe today; on the contrary, they were two interrelated aspects of the same activity.

Dee considered his goal to overcome the split between the Protestant and Catholic churches by turning to the unclouded theology of the first centuries of Christianity and thus creating a universal world religion.

Reputation

John Dee was the architect of the idea, was a magician of the era and a real "Elizabethan".

Dee in fiction

There is a place in London that every self-respecting occult-mystic-esoteric should definitely visit. This is the church next to which the father lived in the 16th century. founder of modern Angelology and Enochian Magic... The man who wrote one of the most important treatises in the magic of symbols " Hieroglyphic monad”.

The name of this most educated man of his time, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, philosopher and magician - John Dee.

Dee's surname “Du” comes from a Welsh word meaning "black." According to another version, his father was a Jew who converted to Christianity and changed his last name.

In any case, this person's knowledge of the subtle energies and powers was incredibly deep, whether he received them, as a legacy from the Jewish tradition, or it was the workings of his soul in past incarnations.

He was born July 13, 1527 in the family of the cloth merchant Ronald Dee. Educated at St. James's College, Cambridge, he established himself as a brilliant mathematician. At the age of 23, he lectures, gathering the best scientists of that time.

Then he entered the University of Leuven (now KU Leuven, Belgium), where his mentor was the great cartographer Frisius Gemma, and his friends were Gerhard Mercator and Abraham Ortelius.

He was predicted to have a successful career as a university teacher, but Dee became interested in astrology. By this, he forever spoiled his authority in academia.

But despite this, it was he who was at the origins of the creation of the British Museum, and the library he collected on science and magic was one of the largest in Europe at that time. It contained more than 3000 books, which is an incredibly huge number for the 16th century. But this is not a university, but his personal! These were books about love, alchemy, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, history, which shows his amazingly versatile mind. Many books were marked with his notes.

Maybe that's why he didn't accumulate wealth. He invested all his money in books.

Alas, his unique library was plundered while he was traveling in Europe.

Dee's fate is as amazing as his visionary research.

Having compiled the horoscope of Queen Mary Tudor, he goes on trial for "calculations", and then again the court. Now for being a Protestant. A brilliant defense and it is justified.

It is not known how all this would have ended for him, but the time of the bloody Mary's reign is coming to an end and
power comes Elizabeth.

Dee becomes her main advisor and magician. The Queen trusts him with knowledge so much that she instructs him to calculate an auspicious date for her coronation.

He is under her protection. It comes to the point that the royal carriage is often seen near his house, where Elizabeth comes to get advice.

But the main magical story of John Dee begins in 1582, when he meets Edward Talbot-Kelly.

Some considered him to be the brilliant adventurer of his era, but there is another opinion. In the magic circle, Kelly was considered a serious magician and alchemist, who was an order of magnitude higher than Dee in his practical skills.

Having met and become friends, the two geniuses of magic begin to engage in mediumistic experiments with a magic mirror made of obsidian, which you can still see in the British Museum.

From 1582 to 1589, they establish contact with the beings of the subtle world and receive from them various information about the structure of the world. But most importantly, this is their statement about the discovery of the writing system received from the angels and is the language of these heavenly beings.

In 1583, Dee and Kelly were invited to Poland by Count Olbrecht Laski and on September 21, the magicians leave Britain to continue their work on the continent.

With magical experiments, the friends hit King Stephen in Krakow. The city, at that time, was one of the major centers of European magic and astrology, yielding in scope and number of alchemical laboratories, except perhaps to Prague.

It is possible that it was Dee who became the prototype of the notorious Pan Twardowski magician and wizard of the 16th century, who became an invariable character of Polish magic tales and stories. And friend and partner Kelly has become his servant.

According to some reports, several times they were able to demonstrate the transformation of base metals into gold. They did it with the help of a magic book “ The book of dunstan”And some powder of“ red tincture ”.

Kelly found the book and powder in the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, where he was led by a "supernatural being".

This is how he describes it Elias Ashmole(Elias Ashmole) - a member of the British Royal Society, alchemist, antiquary, whose library and collection later became the basis of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

Although the son of Di subsequently denied this version.

According to another legend, the book and powder fell into the hands of Kelly during a trip to Wales, where he bought them for 2 pounds in a tavern. Which seems to me to be a more realistic version. Although the surroundings of Glastonbury keep many mysteries.

In 1587, Kelly, as a medium, informs Dee that the angels command them to share everything, even their wives. So Kelly and Dee, one might say, became the first official founders of the “Swedish” family.

But in 1588, the paths of friends diverge.

Kelly has a passion for alchemy in the hope that the patronage of the wealthy Czech Vilém of Rosenberg will help him get rich. But his passion for alchemical experiments leads to a sad outcome.

For refusing to create gold (or failure to experiment with the creation of gold) for the great lover of the secret sciences, King Rudolph II, Kelly goes to prison twice.

From the last imprisonment in 1597, Kelly tries to escape, but dies.

According to one of the versions, the rope along which he descended turned out to be too short. Kelly broke his leg while falling and soon dies from his wounds.

According to another version, he was killed in 1595, about which there is an entry in Dee's diaries on November 25, where it says “News from the continent. Sir Edward Kelly has been killed. "

Be that as it may, at the age of 42 (or 40), the magician who was able to demonstrate the transformation of base metals into gold to King Rudolph II dies under mysterious circumstances while trying to escape from royal imprisonment.

Did Kelly refuse to make gold for the king or could he?

There is a version of modern technologists that there was no magic at the heart of the demonstration of transmutation. A sample for experiments could be smelted from gold and silver in proportions so that its color was silver. When dipped in acid, the silver "passed" into solution, leaving pure gold.

It is this "deception" that is accused of "another great magician who collaborated with Rudolph II - Dionysius Zacharias.

Deception? Perhaps. But apparently, such a show was enough to receive an order and allocate funds for alchemical experiments in the laboratory.

After the death of Rudolf II, as the rumor goes, 84 centners of alchemical gold and 60 centners of silver in the form of precious ingots were found in his treasury.

Kelly or Dionysus Zacharius created them, it is unknown. As well, were there really these centners of precious metals.

And John Dee returned to England in 1589, where he found his house devastated and his library plundered.

Queen Elizabeth is at the pinnacle of power and no longer needs his services.

He is offered to go rector to Manchester. But not finding a common language with the leadership of the University in Manchester, Dee returns to London.

For John Dee, this is the end of his career. He lives in loneliness and poverty. Of the servants, he has one cook and does not always have firewood to keep warm.

In 1608, the great magician and alchemist died. He will be buried next to his house, literally across the fence from his garden, in the consecrated ground of the church built by Elizabeth's father, Henry VIII. The rest of his property will be sold.

But his fame will not fade. His Hieroglyphic Monad will become one of the most popular books on the symbolism of the divine and will then be used by various occult communities from the Rosicrucians.

The history of the mediumistic experiments that discovered the angelic language of Enochian magic will also not disappear. In one of his chests, they accidentally discover a secret compartment and in it diaries, with a description of mediumistic experiments and their results.

These diaries constituted the main legacy of Dee. They are collected in three volumes and are known as "Book of Secrets", "Witch Diaries" and "Book of Enoch".

In fact, John Dee became the father of modern occultism. An outstanding author of books on ritual magic relied on his work Papus... The found diaries became conductors for the mediumistic experiments of Mathers and the "Golden Dawn". One of these reports on the Golden Dawn experiments, I read in the London library of the Grand Lodge of Masons.

Magical " The chess of fate Masons for interacting with spirits are directly associated with the name of Dee and his description of 72 angelic forces.

Linguistic research " Enochian”Confirmed that it is indeed a language, with its own rules, alphabet and grammar.

Dee's magic mirror, made of obsidian, disappears during the Walpole collection sale in 1842. An unknown person bought it for 12 pounds. But in the end, the artifact pops up in the collection of the British Museum, where it is still located, next to several other items belonging to Dee.

They came to Europe from America, where they belonged to the priests of the all-seeing and all-knowing god Tezcatlipoca. And the book the fate of the world "Tonalamatl”, Was considered a mirror that reflects the destinies of people and gods. Therefore, those who came to the oracle were greeted with the words: "You came to see yourself in the mirror, you came to consult a book."

Did Dee know about this? Is it really in the British Museum that John Dee mirror? Who knows?.

The British monarchy has always worked closely with the magical world, so it is possible that even now, someone is using this artifact. Although officially, any access to the obsidian mirror is prohibited.

In any case, John Dee was an extraordinary man. Thanks to him and his communication with an elf girl named Madina, with the angels Ave and Raphael, we have Enochian magic and the language spoken by the angels and the inhabitants of the Garden of Eden.

The place of his grave is unknown. The cemetery was bombed during the Second World War and all that has survived to this day are old gravestones.

But John Dee's name is not on the stone slabs. The exact place of his resting place is not known.

On the site of his house and garden, there is a modern residential building. Since in England houses, instead of a number, most often have a name, then next to the church, in the place where there was a garden and John Dee's house, you will find a house under the number “ House john dee”.

In the church itself, you can touch the place in the wall, under which a gloved hand is walled up, like Dee himself. According to legend, it was put there just before the burial of the magician's body.

Across the road, on the banks of the Thames, there is a wonderful bench where you can sit and meditate. It is possible that Dee often came here and wandered along the shore thinking about magic and alchemy. Or just take a break from mediumistic experiments.

You can try to see what is hidden behind the strip of London fogs from the time of the Virgin Queen. And maybe you are lucky to remember ...

A John Dee prototypes in world literature were Prospero in Shakespeare's Tempest, Pan Twardowski in Polish and Lithuanian fairy tales and legends, Faust in Goethe.

John Dee often signed his letters and manuscripts with three numbers 007. Therefore, the hero of spy stories James Bond owes him his "secret code" agent 007.

Mages don't go anywhere. They remain in our memory and history forever.

We offer you a unique translation of primary sources on " Enochian magic"Or" Angelic magic ", magic designed to communicate with spirits. At the present time, "Enochian Magic" has become more widespread in the presentation of the Order of the Golden Dawn, here you will get acquainted with the originals written by the hand of John Dee himself.

John Dee(1527-1608) - a famous English mathematician and astrologer of his time, who enjoyed the special patronage of the English Queen Elizabeth I, justly called the "English Faust". The life and work of the sorcerer is known with all the details, thanks, first of all, to his numerous diaries that have survived to this day. It is with these diaries, more precisely those of them that describe the interaction of John Dee with spirits, that the Russian-speaking reader can now familiarize himself with.

The first volume includes five of his diaries, entitled by him as "Books of Mysteries", which cover the period from 1581 to 1583. These diaries were discovered by accident in a secret compartment of a chest that once belonged to John Dee, which was sold after his death.

From the introduction to the book:

"John Dee from his youth he was passionately fond of science, especially mathematics, devoting up to eighteen hours a day to his studies. In general, science became everything for him, and he was fired up with the desire to achieve absolute knowledge. But not finding it in the books, which he collected more than 2500, which at that time was the largest library in England, and not finding adepts, in search of whom he traveled all over Europe, he decided to resort to ceremonial magic, summon suitable spirits and gain knowledge from them. He began to do this in 1581. But Dee ran into difficulties when working with the perfume alone; since communication took place in an altered state of consciousness, he was not always able to adequately memorize and write down what the spirits told him. Therefore, he decided to work with an assistant medium, who would come into contact with the spirits and convey their words, and he would write down and ask questions. Dee had several such assistants, but one necromancer named Edward Kelly (or Edward Talbot, as he was originally introduced to John Dee) became the main one.

Basically, at the beginning of these experiments, contact with the spirits took place in the office, where the magic items needed for this were located, the main of which were magic mirrors. He mentions three such mirrors: a "large crystal sphere", a "rimmed stone" (which is a spherical stone with a cross on top, standing on three legs), and simply a "stone" (about the size of an egg), which, according to Dee, was "materialized" by spirits, i.e. "Thickened" right before our eyes. Dee also used, although he himself does not mention this, a black obsidian mirror (as it was later established, of Aztec origin). Some of these mirrors have survived and are now in the British Museum. The spirits themselves, as a rule, appeared in these magic mirrors, and Dee conducted conversations with them through Edward Kelly, immersed in a trance.

As for the calling procedure, as a rule, at the end of the session, the spirits themselves appointed the time for the next session, so there was no need to call them again, it was enough to look closely into the magic mirror, in which they appeared. During these sessions, the spirits told, among other things, what magic items are needed to summon them. The most important of these are the so-called "Holy Table" (made from laurel wood) and the "Seal of God" (made from beeswax); also a triangular plaque (the so-called lamina, i.e. a metal plate with inscriptions), which must be worn on the chest during evocations; also a ring, a rod, seven so-called "tablets of creation" (made of tin) - all this with a detailed description of their manufacture and use.

Further, during these sessions, an unusual hierarchy of spirits was described, namely 49 spirits with their seals, which consist of 7 kings, 7 princes - which correspond to 7 days of the week - and which each have 6 servants under them. There are also some sons and daughters of the world, twenty-eight in number. But the most important thing that spirits revealed to John Dee is the language of Enoch, in which one can directly communicate with spirits. As for the spirits themselves, with whom Dee communicated, the main ones were represented by the names of the biblical archangels, namely: Anail, Uriel, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

So, the first volume of the "Diaries of the Warlock" included five of his diaries, entitled by him as "Books of Secrets", which cover the period from 1581 to 1583. These diaries were discovered by accident in a secret compartment of a chest that once belonged to John Dee, which was sold after his death. In addition to these diaries, there were also other manuscripts of Dee, and half of these papers, according to the mistress of the chest, were used by her maid on the farm, since she did not immediately find out about their value.

The second volume will include John Dee's Witchcraft Diaries, published in 1659 under the title “A True and Reliable Account of What Happened Many Years Between Dr. John Dee and some spirits ”, which cover the period from 1583 to 1607.

The third volume will include the manuscripts of John Dee, in which he systematized the information received from the spirits on the "Magic of Enoch", the basis of which is a special language intended for communication with spirits, which was the main result of his experiments. Dee also compiled several small special books for invoking forty-nine spirits, which will also be included in the third volume. "
