HSE elective courses. HSE Niu launches free courses

NRU HSE is one of the leading and largest universities in Russia. The profile of the university is socio-economic, humanities, as well as mathematics and computer science. The university has over twenty faculties and departments, there is a military department. In 2012, the Higher School of Economics included the Moscow State Institute of Electronics and Mathematics and two institutions of additional professional education - the Training Center for Leadership Training and the State Academy of Investment Professionals.

HSE graduates also have the opportunity to receive diplomas from the best European universities. As part of its international activities, the university has more than 130 international partners. Foreign languages are taught in large volumes in all faculties, and in some faculties teaching is conducted in English.

The Higher School of Economics (in the student community - "HSE") is distinguished by openness and transparency of the admissions campaign and financial activities. An indicator of the quality of training at the Higher School of Economics is the employment of graduates. According to a study of the career growth of graduates, carried out six months after graduation, 80% of graduates work in their specialty, and 20% continue their studies in a master's program or in graduate school. According to independent ratings, the HSE ranks first in Russia in terms of graduate salaries. Public ratings of students are compiled - both current and accumulated over the entire period of study. Based on current ratings, discounts of up to 70% of the cost of payment are accrued for students studying on a contractual basis, as well as a scholarship is awarded to students studying on a budgetary basis. The final rankings are the basis for selection for training programs of the next level and a guideline for potential employers.

Of course, for admission to such a university, both the paid and the budgetary departments, the knowledge gained at school is not enough. Therefore, in order to increase the effectiveness of training, it is necessary to work with an experienced teacher additionally. The "Unified State Exam - Center", together with the teachers of the Higher School of Economics, prepares schoolchildren for the Unified State Exam from year to year.

Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Economic Sciences (Department of Theoretical Economics).
Lecturer at the HSE Lyceum
Teacher of the course "School of Economics" at the HSE Internet School

The HSE Internet School is a great opportunity for students from other cities to study effectively, in some cases better than full-time students, because the distance learning method fosters independence. To enter a university through the Olympiad is in a sense easier than using the Unified State Exam, because you only need to prepare in one subject. But the problem of preparing an applicant is that there is no literature that would teach to solve problems in economics. The main objective of the course is to teach the solution of quantitative and qualitative problems to prepare for the Olympiads in economics.

Margarita Kosik

Listener of the course "Final essay and literature"

I want to thank you for helping all of us (and me personally) throughout the year. I was with you from the final essay (for which I received 5 out of 5) to the USE itself. I will definitely write a letter :) You really helped me a lot. Thanks to you, I fell in love with many foreign writers, watched several films (according to your recommendations), which opened my eyes to many things, and, of course, for giving us so much interesting information from all areas of culture.

Even without preparing for the Olympiad separately, I was able to write the Highest test in journalism for 86 points, citing in my work some material that you gave us. Even though 4 points were not enough for me to win, I am still glad that in the 11th grade I was able to broaden my horizons. Thanks for your hard work!

Dmitry Mazaev

Deputy Dean for Alumni and Employers, HSE Faculty of Law
Associate Professor, Department of Theory and History of Law, Faculty of Law, National Research University Higher School of Economics
Lecturer of the course "School of Law" at the HSE Internet School for the 2016-2017 academic year

About 50% of those who entered the Faculty of Law of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, as a rule, are the winners of the Olympiads, who did not waste time on other subjects, but trained with precision and success. The subject "Law" is the same as economics, HSE's "branded" subjects. We give knowledge on the discipline in an expanded form, in a sense it is also a path to growing up and getting to know life, because knowledge from this area is applied at every step, from the implementation and protection of consumer rights to constitutional rights.

Valeria Ismailova

Listener of the course "Oriental Studies"

I was not mistaken in choosing a school and have never regretted it. The first thing I paid attention to was the training format. After each topic, a test was offered, with which you could test your knowledge, as well as practical work, which was compiled in the format of an Olympiad. From the very first classes, it became incredibly interesting for me to study here. Every time I mastered a new topic, I was completely immersed in it. I am extremely glad that I became a student of the Internet School of Oriental Studies. Thanks to my studies at the Internet school, I acquired many useful skills: I learned how to properly allocate time, work with complex texts, I delved into reading serious literature, and of course, I became more disciplined.

Kashkarova Tatiana Petrovna

Deputy Head of the Department of English for Economics and Mathematics
Senior Lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages, National Research University Higher School of Economics
Teacher of the course "English" at the HSE Internet School

The online school is designed for especially motivated children who have decided on how they see their future. Therefore, our task is to help them in achieving their goal as efficiently as possible. "

Timur Sharibayevich Adilbaev

Author and teacher of the course "Oriental Studies" at the HSE Lyceum in 2014-2016
Member of the HSE Lyceum Initiative Group for Research
Lecturer of the course "Oriental Studies" at the HSE Internet School

I myself entered HSE as an Olympiad winner. It's nice to know already in April that you have entered, and for applicants this is an attractive option. In our subject, it is important to develop orientalist erudition, to give an understanding of philosophy, culture, and much depends on the student himself, who is motivated and ready to approach solving tasks in a systematic and original way, for example: to find Confucian topics in the poems of Korean authors, based on written sources. In a word, look between the lines. We have very interesting tests - for example, a student can perform it in the form of a letter from a German colonel from Japan at the beginning of the twentieth century, where the student describes the peculiarities of culture, mythology or everyday life.

The full name of the institution is the National Research University Higher School of Economics, or HSE for short. The unofficial name is the result of student folk art - "HSE".

This university is included in the top 5 best universities in the country and is rightly considered the most progressive and prestigious among the capital's institutions.

General information about the Higher School of Economics

The university operates on a budget-commercial basis: the institution receives government subsidies, income from its own research projects, contract students and from third-party sponsors and organizations. Such multichannel injections into the university budget enable the institution's management to constantly improve the material and technical base of the HSE and the quality of education itself.

On the basis of the Higher School of Economics, there are 128 research centers, 36 research and design laboratories, 32 international laboratories under the guidance of foreign researchers. HSE conducts the most intensive international activity among Moscow universities, cooperates with 298 foreign partners, has 41 double degree programs with foreign universities.

It is noteworthy that from the very day of its foundation, the institution has been headed by the permanent rector - Ya. I. Kuzminov.

“We study not for school, but for life” is the motto of the Higher School of Economics.

History of University

The Higher School of Economics cannot boast of a turbulent history. The first brick of this European-oriented university was not laid by Peter I himself, and its corridors were not trampled by Lomonosov or Nietzsche.

It is a relatively young, but very intensively developing, progressive university. If educational institutions were identified with cities, then HSE would be Singapore or Hong Kong.

So, the school was opened for students with November 17, 1992. Already in 2009, this university received the title of National Research University on a competitive basis.

Faculty of Law. It is safe to say that this faculty prepares the best lawyers of Russian modernity. This is not unreasonable, because the university itself was not created without the participation of the administrative and ruling elite. It is important to note that students are taught material with a huge emphasis on practice. They invite specialists from government agencies, practicing lawyers, etc.

Faculty of Humanities... This faculty can in no way be called profile for the HSE, experts' reviews also note that humanitarians are trained here with the understanding that their specialization is a priori inferior to those of computer scientists or economists. But the faculty has the strongest school of foreign languages. Also, most of the lectures are public and optional for students of other specialties. Every student who wants to expand his horizons can come to cultural studies, philosophy and additional courses of foreign languages.

Faculty of Communications, Media and Design. This faculty is the fiefdom of female students, there are even fewer males here than in the pedagogical institute. Apparently, the laurels of Anna Wintour or Carrie Bradshaw do not give rest to the ladies anymore. But seriously, the faculty trains not only journalists, but rather full-fledged specialists for media communications with an emphasis on working in the Internet environment, PR companies, and design institutions.

Faculty of Economic Sciences- the most specialized and largest faculty. Student reviews about economics and statistics at the HSE as a field of study sound rather ambiguous. Allegedly, the academic load among students is on the verge of unbearable. But the cooperation with world transnational corporations and universities, which is available at this faculty, gives students access to unique knowledge and the possibility of unlimited development and successful employment anywhere in the world. The future Henry Fords and Adam Smiths are produced here. Let’s lower our eyes to the fact that the well-known S. Mavrodi successfully studied here.

International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF)

This faculty should definitely be discussed separately. This is a diamond among pearls. A unique educational institution in the CIS. To create it back in 1997, the Higher School of Economics and the London School of Economics (one of the three leaders in economic education in the world) joined forces. And it turned out such a grandiose brainchild. Graduates of the institute receive both candy and ice cream - a diploma from the HSE and a diploma from the London School of Economics.

The competition is merciless, and the load on the faculty is impressive. From the very first day of school, all training is conducted in English. Budget seats only for the winners of the All-Russian Olympiad. The HSE's rave reviews of international relations only fuel public interest in this university. Students spend a third of the course in London, absorbing all the practical knowledge that the experience of such an education can give. The excitement around admission to this faculty is enormous, even the tuition fee of 600 thousand rubles a year does not stop applicants.

If the courage and finances were not enough to study at ICEF, you can get a bachelor's degree at another faculty, and enroll in a master's program under a double degree program. HSE has 40 such programs.

Features of studying at HSE

There are many educational features at the Higher School of Economics. Students' responses note that studying at this university is not like standard education in our country at all. But this is just easy to explain - the university eagerly absorbs the experience of successful world educational institutions. And if we pay attention to the success of HSE alumni, then the rest of the national universities would also benefit from broadening their views on teaching and not turning away from the successful world experience.

The Higher School of Economics was one of the first national universities to switch to the 4 + 2 study program (bachelor's, master's). The academic year is divided not into semesters, but into modules, there are four of them, at the end of each student there is a certification. The sum of the grades for the modules determines the annual grade.

The grading system is ten-point, in the European manner.

In the tactics of building the educational process, an orientation towards success is visible. Students are immediately trained to be confident, competitive and highly motivated. The university has a rating system. Reviews of HSE students about these very ratings are full of devilish smiles, but even disgruntled, tired students admit that nothing motivates as this very rating risk.

So what's the deal? Everything is simple. Highly rated contractors receive discounts or are transferred to the budget. State employees with a high rating keep the scholarship, those with an average rating lose the scholarship, and those with a low rating are transferred to a contract. This encourages students to be active, to study non-stop, to get used to the conditions of a highly competitive environment.

There is no such subject as "Physical culture" at the university. There is a gym, various sections, courses, etc. Please develop, take care of your health and physical condition. But this is a matter of choice.

Positive feedback from students about HSE

Only the opinion of children can be more subjective than the opinion of students. Often, responses from HSE students are based on personal success or failure in the learning process. But quite a few young people dare to present their opinions about HSE objectively and rationally.

A huge plus for the university - for this circumstance alone, he needs to erect a monument in the form of a happy student - there is practically no corruption at the HSE. This is noted by most of the students. Either the reason is the intensive funding of the university's activities by sponsors, or in adherence to the principles of "European transparency", but students agree that it is very real to get a diploma only with knowledge.

The quality of knowledge, lectures and teacher training varies across faculties. If we analyze the reviews about the HSE in Moscow, students agree that the quality of teaching in the humanities and political science profile lags a little behind.

Not a single review will describe the quality of education as eloquently as the statistics of employment by profile after graduation from this university: 94% of graduates have found a suitable job. This is despite the fact that 48% have warmed up a warm corporate place even before they receive their diploma. Leading companies send their recruits to prestigious universities to keep an eye on talent while they are still in college.

What negative aspects of studying at HSE are most often indicated by students in their reviews?

Most of all, students complain about the workload and the need to acquire knowledge in an environment of permanent competition. You can endlessly talk about whether it is possible to push the foreheads of students who were children yesterday. But the HSE leadership has made a choice and is not going to cancel the rating system.

Also, students are indignant about the "Antiplagiat" system. There is a university program that tests every job. Only 20% citation is allowed in the text with an exact indication of the source. Everything else is the author's personal judgments, conclusions, etc. Naturally, this greatly increases the time spent on preparing abstracts and course papers for students.

Dormitories of the Higher School of Economics

HSE buildings are scattered throughout the city, as are the hostels. Today, the Higher School of Economics has 9 hostels. Reviews about HSE hostels are mostly positive, but utterly ironic. The whole humor is that they are located in the suburbs, and the road from the place of residence to the academic building is an inexhaustible ground for student jokes. Aside from this inconvenience, the rest of the HSE dormitories are made “for people”. They are apartment type, they have all the amenities. In Moscow, it is cheaper and closer, but it is only suitable for residents who are unpretentious in terms of comfort.

All hostels have free wireless internet with the ability to access at any time of the day.

The atmosphere in the hostel is upbeat, productive and motivating. At the HSE, they did an elementary and ingenious thing, they paid tribute to the desire of every person for everyday comfort. We have made modern classrooms and dormitories for students, and they do not care how to accumulate water in basins, wash their hair over the sink, etc. But they care about acquiring knowledge and self-development.

Master's programs at HSE: student reviews, master's programs

Accepts documents in electronic form. After the approval of the electronic application, the originals can be brought to the admissions office or sent by mail.

All applicants pass the competition in the form of entrance exams (most often economics + English + mathematics, but disciplines vary depending on the faculty).

The enrollment order is issued sometime in mid-August, two weeks before the start of the lectures.

HSE master's programs look very attractive. Almost all of them are bilateral and give students the opportunity to obtain double diplomas and gain a unique learning experience at the HSE. also by higher institutions in Canada, USA, Luxembourg, Finland, etc.

The Higher School of Economics has opened an enrollment for free university-wide electives, which can be attended not only by HSE students, but also by everyone. The courses for these electives were selected by a special university commission. The choice of topics is very wide - from programming in Python to the megalopolises of the world, from argumentation in English to Islamic fundamentalism in the modern world. Read more about these electives in the questions and answers.

What are “university-wide electives”?

These are author's training courses in various areas of training. University-wide electives have long taken their place in the educational space of the university. Every year HSE launches a whole pool of such courses of varying duration (from one month to two semesters) and topics. Humanities were pioneers: the first 10 electives were launched in 2003 by staff. This year, the university offers over 50 courses that represent the four main areas of university education: economics and management, mathematics and engineering, humanities and social sciences.

Who can visit them?

Both HSE students or staff members and those who have nothing to do with the university but want to broaden their horizons, get acquainted with new areas of modern science, and gain additional knowledge and competencies can study at university-wide electives. It doesn't matter how old you are, what your basic education is, if you are interested in some problematic, you have a research enthusiasm - come.

Is it free for everyone, even those who are not from HSE?

Yes, courses are free for absolutely everyone.

Which of the electives are the most interesting?

It is difficult to assess the "interestingness", it all depends on individual preferences. There are courses that have been taught for more than a year and have their own audience, for example, or "Fashion, costume, personality: a person and his clothes in a public space." There are those that start this year for the first time: "Physics of Condensed Matter: Basic Ideas and Contemporary Challenges", "Byzantine Culture", etc.

There are applied courses, such as "Applied Economic Analysis in STATA", "Programming in Python for Data Collection and Analysis", and there are courses that allow you to take a fresh look at the entire history of mankind that can change your worldview - "History of Western European music: from Bach to Schönberg. The experience of philosophical analysis and rational perception ”,“ Islamic fundamentalism in the modern world ”.

A complete list of electives can be found.

How to enroll in university-wide electives?

Registration of students for courses is carried out electronically through the LMS system:

1. Students of the Higher School of Economics log into the LMS system using their username and password and register by selecting the Elective Courses tab.

2. External participants can apply electronically using the link.

Some electives conduct additional self-registration on the pages of their courses: ISITI electives, the course "GR in modern Russia: theory and practice."

I'm not sure if I can go to every lecture. Will they deduct for the passes?

The elective is your free choice, you decide whether you want to attend it. But by signing up for a course, you take on some obligations and, above all, to yourself. For absences from classes, they are not expelled, but nevertheless, the rules for attending electives are regulated by each teacher individually. The internal logic of some courses is that if you skip a lot, you will not be able to master the entire course.

Do you have to take exams at the end?

The exam is voluntary, even for HSE students. In case of successful passing of the test, HSE students receive credits for the studied elective and can enter it in the Appendix of their future diploma. External students of some electives, such as ISITI electives, may qualify for a certificate.

When will the class schedule be known?

The university-wide electives are very different and they start at different times (September, October, November, January and March). You can get acquainted with the schedule on the website of each elective or department responsible for its implementation.

Where will the electives take place?

Lectures will be held at different venues of the Higher School of Economics.

When will they take place?

Mostly in the evening from 18.10 to 21.00.
