Mari State Technical University (MarSTU)(full title Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education "Mari State Technical University", FGBOU VPO "MarSTU") is the only technical and one of the first universities of the Republic of Mari El, the largest educational and scientific center of the republic. The University conducts joint research with universities and organizations in the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, the USA, France, Finland, Greece, Germany, works under the programs TEMPUS, TACIS and "Cultural Initiative", etc.

Story
PLTI played an important role in the training of engineering personnel for the country during the years of industrialization. Graduates worked in the domestic timber industry, working as directors, chief specialists of forestries, timber industry enterprises, forest trusts and other forest enterprises and organizations.
The most difficult period was the war and post-war years. Then the institute had to be evacuated to a forest settlement. But even there, the institute continued to produce qualified personnel and made it possible to introduce scientific ideas important for the front, for which it received gratitude from the government and the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the country.
gg. - an important period in the history of MarSTU, during this period there was an increase and build-up of forces, which predetermined its transformation into a polytechnic university. The result of this activity was the introduction into production of 84 research and development works. This is the unconditional merit of the director - rector M.D. Danilova.
In 1968, due to the growing needs of the Volga-Vyatka region and the Mari ASSR in engineering personnel of various specialties, the Volga Forest Engineering Institute was transformed into the Mari Polytechnic Institute (MarPI). In the first decade, new faculties were opened: engineering and construction, radio engineering, woodworking technology, machine building, reclamation and road. And in the late 70s. an educational closed-circuit television system, an educational computer center were created, the first display class was designed.
In 2010, the institute was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples for its services in training highly qualified specialists for the national economy and in the development of scientific research.
The level of educational, methodological and scientific work achieved by the university gave grounds for the team to receive on March 31, 1995 the status of a state technical university (MarSTU).
By order of the Federal Agency for Education No. 1166 dated June 29, 2007, the Mari State Technical University was reorganized into a university complex in the form of joining it as structural units:
- federal state educational institution of secondary vocational education "Yoshkar-Ola Agrarian College";
- state educational institution "Vocational School No. 1";
And also joined the university in the form of separate structural divisions (branches of the university):
- State educational institution of secondary vocational education "Mari Pulp and Paper College" (now the Volga branch of MarSTU)
- State educational institution of secondary vocational education "Mariinsky-Posad forestry technical school" (now Mariinsky-Posad branch of MarSTU)

The Mari State Technical University as an independent higher educational institution was established in 1932 under the name of the Volga Forest Engineering Institute on the basis of the Kazan Forestry Engineering Institute transferred to Yoshkar-Ola. Gorky. In 1982, the Institute was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples for its merits in the training of highly qualified specialists for the national economy and the development of scientific research. In 1995, the university was transformed into the Mari State Technical University.
