The VIII international competition “New Children's Book” has been announced. Deadline April 2, 2017 (extended until April 9).

Organizer: publishing house "ROSMEN"

There are no restrictions on age, citizenship or place of residence of participants.

The competition includes original works created in Russian and not previously published in commercial editions (over 1000 copies), as well as illustrations, both previously published and unpublished.

Works are accepted in three main categories:

  • In the “Poems and Fairy Tales for the Little Ones” nomination, works for children from birth to 5 years old, up to 20,000 characters with spaces (0.5 author’s sheet), including works with author’s illustrations, are accepted. The purpose of the nomination is to search and publish fairy tales for little ones, fairy tales in verse, fairy tales-pictures, continuing and developing the traditions of prose and poetic works for children, laid down by V. Suteev, K. Chukovsky and B. Zakhoder. The genres of fairy tales and poems for children require increased demands on the language and intonation of the work, since parents primarily read works of these genres aloud to their children. Therefore, the main requirements for manuscripts in this category are style, appropriateness for age and volume, and originality of the storyline. Works exceeding 20,000 characters in length will not be accepted for consideration.
  • In the “Fantasy World” nomination, prose works for children from 10 to 16 years old with a volume of 8 to 15 author’s sheets are accepted (1 author’s sheet = 40,000 characters with spaces). The main requirement for works in the nomination is a unique world, original images, and non-trivial plot development.
  • In the “New Children's Illustration” nomination, illustrations for any works for children from 2 to 12 years are accepted. The competition application must contain 4 illustrations indicating the works for which they were made. If the illustrations have already been published, the date and publisher must be indicated. Basic requirements for works: strict compliance with the specified age, originality of style and artistic techniques.

  • The main prize is a contract and publication of the winning manuscript in the ROSMEN publishing house or illustration of one of the books.
  • The winners and runners-up of the competition are awarded special prizes.
  • The best works of the competition participants are published in an illustrated collection.
  • Regardless of the opinion of the jury, the ROSMEN publishing house also considers other manuscripts submitted to the competition for possible publication.

Yesterday I accidentally remembered that I still don’t know how the competition ended, organized by the largest children’s publishing house in Russia, Rosmen, announced back in December last year in LiveJournal.

“The rules are very simple,” the organizers wrote then. “We are publishing two spreads of a little book, for each page of which you need to come up with a couplet. The main prize: a contract with the publishing house + a set of books. There can be several main prizes!..”

Here, in fact, are the book spreads themselves for the little ones:

Then I came up with several versions of stories and sent them off. And yesterday, unexpectedly for myself, I learned from a link in the comments that the results of the competition were published on February 28 on the “Rosman” page... on Facebook...

The winner is Sergey Elov. His poems:

In Africa it is hot all day and night.

A rhinoceros and a giraffe go to the sea.

And a hippo named Borya

A whole hour awaits them by the sea.

Plop! - The hippopotamus dived into the water first.

Swims bravely with the fish.

Here is a rhinoceros cutting a wave with its nose.

Then the giraffe walks along the bottom.

5 incentive prizes:

Karen Markaryan

The giraffe and rhinoceros are called hippopotamuses:

“We are afraid to swim - what if there is someone there?

What if “It” was hiding in the depths?

Could you check by going to the bottom?”

The hippo dived under the water for his friends,

I saw a lot of sea “people” there:

“Swim calmly, the bottom has been checked!”

Friends are happy - “It” doesn’t live here...

Lyubov Fedorovna

One day a giraffe called to a rhinoceros:

It's so nice to swim a little in the heat!

The hippopotamus on the seashore said:

I can’t let you into the sea without adults!

And a sports coach - a hippopotamus swimmer -

Gives swimming lessons to children.

Now the rhinoceros and giraffe understand:

When it's safe, it's nice to swim!

Lyubov Polupanova

Giraffe and baby rhinoceros

We were going to swim a little.

So as not to suddenly cause trouble,

The lifeguard put on a ring.

A hippopotamus saw friends

My stomach hurt from laughing.

He boldly stepped into the water first,

He swam and dived skillfully.

I follow him seriously, not in make-believe,

Giraffe and baby rhinoceros.

Yulia Ivanova

To learn to swim,

It will take some effort.

In the meantime, just to be on the safe side,

Try on something new soon.

The most faithful friend at sea -

Bright swimming ring.

After all, no one will immediately

Neither a swimmer nor a diver.

Marina Simonova

Oh, what a pity for our friend

No life preserver!

To swim without fear

A mask is enough for me!

Maybe, dear Hippopotamus,

Will you sail with us?

Definitely! A matter of honor

I can swim together with the giraffe!

It’s interesting, isn’t it, how many stories can be written in just two spreads! It is a pity that the organizers of the competition did not inform how many authors participated in the competition and how many poems were sent (it is clear that there is a lot). For example, I had three more options.

Congratulations to all participants and winners! Time will tell how the relationship with Rosman will develop further, hippos will tell))

PS. The answer to my question to Rosman has just arrived (10.55 in Riga). I'm adding it to the post:

"We initially had this competition focused on Facebook, that’s why
the results were published.

We call incentive prizes, of course, not just words
thanks :) These are sets of books from our publishing house."
