Preface

I have a friend who, despite his craft (he is an artist), passionately passionate about science. Whenever we are going together, he with enthusiasm argues about the latest achievements in the field of psychology or quantum mechanics. But it is worth talking about mathematics - and he feels trembling in his knees, that he is very sad. It complains that these strange mathematical symbols are not only amenable to his understanding, but sometimes he does not even know how to pronounce them.

In fact, the cause of his rejection of mathematics is much deeper. He will not attempt in any way than mathematics do and what they mean when they say that this proof is elegant. Sometimes we joke that I just need to sit down and start it to learn from the very Azov, literally from 1 + 1 \u003d 2, and to deepen in mathematics as much as he can.

And although this undertaking seems crazy, I will try to implement it in this book. I will spend you in all the main sections of science, from arithmetic to higher MathematicsSo that those who wanted to get a second chance finally be able to use it. And this time you do not have to go for the desk. This book will not make you an expert in mathematics. But it will help to figure out what the discipline is studying and why it is so fascinating for those who understood it.

We learn how Michael Jordan's slam can help explain the Aza calculus. I will show you a simple and stunning way to understand the fundamental theorem of Euclidean geometry - the theorem of Pythagora. We will try to get to the very essence of some secrets of life, big and small: Did his wife Jay Simpson killed his wife; how to shift the mattress so that he served as long as possible; How many partners need to be changed before playing a wedding - and see why some infinity is more than others.

Mathematics everywhere, you just need to learn to find out. You can see the sinusoid on the back of the zebra, hear the echoes of the Euclide's theorem in the Declaration of Independence; yes what to say there, even in dry reports that preceded World War I, are present negative numbers. You can also see how new directions of mathematics are influenced by our today's life, for example, when we are looking for restaurants using a computer or try to at least understand, and even better - survive frightening fluctuations in the stock market.

Preface

I have a friend who, despite his craft (he is an artist), passionately passionate about science. Whenever we are going together, he enthusiastically argues about the latest achievements in the field of psychology or quantum mechanics.

I will spend you in all the main sections of science, from arithmetic to higher mathematics so that those who wanted to get a second chance finally could use them.

You can see the sinusoid on the back of the zebra, hear the echoes of the Euclide's theorem in the Declaration of Independence; Yes, what to say there, even in dry reports preceding the First World War, there are negative numbers. You can also see how new directions of mathematics are influenced by our today's life, for example, when we are looking for restaurants using a computer or try to at least understand, and even better - survive frightening fluctuations in the stock market.

A series of 15 articles under the general name "Basics of Mathematics" appeared on the network at the end of January 2010. In response to their publication, letters and comments from readers of all ages were sprinkled, among which there were many students and teachers. There were simply inquisitive people, for one reason or another "confused" comprehension of mathematical science; Now they felt that they missed something abouti would like to try again. I gave me a special joy of gratitude from the parents for the fact that with my help could explain to mathematics to their children, and they themselves began to understand it better. It seemed that even my colleagues and comrades, the hot fans of this science, have enjoyed reading articles, with the exception of those moments when they are in need of all sorts of recommendations for the improvement of my brainchild.

Despite the problem, there is an explicit interest in mathematics in society, although this phenomenon is given little attention. We only hear that about fear in front of mathematics, and however, many would gladly try to figure it out better. And it is worth it to happen - they will already be difficult to tear off.

This book will introduce you to the most complex and advanced ideas from the world of mathematics. Chapters are small, easily read and especially do not depend on each other. Among them are also included in the one, the first series of articles in New York Times. So as soon as you feel a light mathematical hunger, without informing you try on the next chapter. If you want to understand more about your question in more detail, then at the end of the book there are notes with additional information and recommendations that you can read about it.

For the convenience of readers who prefer a step-by-step approach, I broke the material for six parts in accordance with the traditional procedure for studying themes.

Part I "Number" begins our journey with arithmetic in children's garden and primary school. It shows how useful there are numbers and how they are magically effective when describing the surrounding world.

Part II "Relationship" translates attention from the numbers themselves to the relationship between them. These ideas are at the heart of algebra and are the first tools to describe how one affects the other, showing the causal relationship between various things: supply and demand, incentive and reaction - in a word, all types of relationships that make peace so multifaceted and rich .

Part III "Figures" tells not about the numbers and symbols, but about the figures and space - the primary geometry and trigonometry. These topics, along with the description of all foreseeable objects through forms, with the help of logical reasoning and evidence raise mathematics on new level accuracy.

In part IV "Time of Changes", we consider calculus - the most impressive and multifaceted direction of mathematics. Calculations allow you to predict the trajectory of the motion of the planets, the cycles of tides and sings and make it possible to understand and describe all periodically changing processes and phenomena in the universe and inside us. An important place in this part is assigned to the study of infinity, the doubt of which became a breakthrough, which allowed the calculations to earn. The calculations helped to solve many tasks arising in the ancient world, and this ultimately led to the revolution in science and the modern world.

Part V "Multiplayer Data" deals with probability, statistics, networks and data processing - it is still relatively young areas generated by the ordered parties of our life, such as the possibility and good luck, uncertainty, risk, variability, chaotic, interdependence. Using the appropriate means of mathematics and the corresponding data types, we will learn to detect patterns in the random stream.

At the end of our trip in part VI "the boundaries of the possible" we get closer to the limits of mathematical knowledge, to the border area between what is already known, and the fact that while still unpacious and not good. We will again pass on topics in the already familiar order: numbers, relationships, figures, changes and infinity, - but at the same time we will consider each of them more deeply, in its modern embodiment.

This book is capable of changing your attitude to mathematics. It consists of short chapters, in each of which you will discover something new. You will learn how helpful are the number to study the surrounding world, you will understand what the charm of geometry, get acquainted with the grace of integral calculus, make sure the importance of statistics and come in touch with infinity. In one of the May days last year, I sat assistant on control work in mathematics in grade 10. Bored, I took from the teacher's table "Excess" version of the work and began to decide. The work was made in the format of the exam in mathematics, which I finished learning from 1989, released from high School. However, without much effort, I managed to solve 11 tasks in part in- more than many writing work on that day. One of the student + Yulia Sobolev Surprise watched as I solved, and after it came to me:

I first see how an assistant who is not a teacher of mathematics sits and decides. Sorry for the question, but did it somehow come in handy in life?

The question of the tenth-grader did not put me in a dead end. The fact is that with mathematics at school I had love without reciprocity: in the sense that mathematics loved me, and I- not. That is, math has always been easy for me, there was no problem, I also remember all my teachers, I also remember with warmth ... But I didn't love mathematics, and that's it! That's it happens. A, enrolling in humanitarian university (By education I am a history teacher), I suddenly became acute to feel the lack of mathematics. I would seem to me that I am stupid not by day, but by the hour. And therefore on 1-2 courses to fill this emptiness, herself (!) It took and solved the collections of the Olympiad tasks, the entire textbook was rewiced for graduation class. AND- Oh, miracle! Clarity of the mind and the logical of thinking began to return to the little. And then, the study is already on the 3rd year, I read the book L. Carroll "Logic Game" (thanks Sergey Miheelson), fond of logic and the need for mathematics has somehow disappeared. And when, after a couple of years after the end of the institute, began to teach the economy, then mathematics firmly settled in my mind- The challenges must somehow decide.
What am I writing all this? So long preface is designed to explain: why I gladly accepted the offer + Natalia Shanina , assistant project manager manager + Mann, Ivanov and Ferber , take on the review of the book "Pleasure from X" (such a verbal punishment turned out).
I liked the book from the first pages: I love when you show beauty mathematics. And I also love when the regularities are in simple. Therefore, already in the first chapter, the discovery was shocked: if we fold in sequentially odd numbers, then in the amount we will receive the squares of the numbers corresponding to the number of different numbers taken in the row. Then- That the odd numbers form corners from which you can make a square, here, for example:

As the book reads, I made new discoveries for myself. Hat love k. different algorithms (I strive to withdraw the algorithm even in some creative and occupational processes), I could not not note the simple algorithm for the square of numbers to 50. So I liked it that I even drew it in a notebook.

Geometric solution solution square equations He brought me to delight: it seems to never have experienced difficulties in their decision, but, while the formulas of the discriminant and the roots seemed to be something abstract. But, if you add geometry, everything becomes obvious and understandable.

And tasks? Oh, these tasks requiring not so much mathematics as logic and attentiveness. Which of you did not meet the type of tasks: "If you turn on the crane with cold water, the bathtub will be filled with half an hour, if with hot, then in an hour. How long will it take to fill the bath when both cranes are included? " The seeming simplicity of the task usually leads to the answer "45 minutes". The answer, of course, incorrect. But can you explain why the correct answer- "20 minutes"? And even do it in different ways? But the author of the book does it brilliantly.

Even reading those sections of the book that were complex for me (well, I don't remember the mathematics in such an amount), it was easy. Not everything understood, but the pleasure of reading received in this case. Because the author in everything sees the specific application of mathematical laws in the surrounding reality. Statistics, oncology, even the choice of a marriage partner - everywhere there are traces of mathematics. And especially died this quote: "In those distant times, when Google has not yet existed, the search on the network was a hopeless occupation".

They prevented only two things when reading.

  1. Well, I do not like to read in electronic format. Moreover, in the case of mathematics, I immediately want to make something to ponslast / count. If I read a paper book, wrote right in the fields and free pages - publishing books + Mann, Ivanov and Ferber Published so that it is originally suggested that there are readers who will not only read the book, but also write in it.
  2. In the book a large number of Notes. The publisher traditionally leaves the text of the book only links with brief information, and deployed notes makes in the form of end footnotes. For me, this format of reading is inconvenient (and in electronic format is uncomfortable). I do not like to jump on the book back / forward. And read notes after reading the main text illogical. As a result, I simply looked at their eyes. Although they deserve to be part of the main text: it is interesting to be written, in the same style as the text of the book.

It would recommend this book not only to lovers of mathematics, but also high school students and students. To ensure an understanding of some things that in the school or university courson seem too abstract. Well, and teachers of mathematics, of course. Here + Natalia Lviva Already read (review). I would like to recommend this book and + Diana Sonina. But - alas and ah! "The daughter goes to the same way as mom." Mathematics gives it easy, she is a medalist municipal Olympiadand what they do with their teacher of mathematics with degrees in research work (with which more than once occupied prizes At various conferences), solving olympiad tasks for high school students, my understanding is difficult to access. But at the same time, he does not even want to hear about mathematics. We need- Does, but without pleasure. And, meanwhile, answering his student to the question of how mathematics I was useful in life, in addition to pragmatic some things, I always have an answer: I need to study at school well, including, and in order to then be able to Help in learning your own children. But daughters my help is not particularly required- Holds itself. And therefore the question remains open: why, with excellent starting conditions - a good teacher, good ability to object, are children who do not like mathematics? The other day discussed it with + Marina Kurvits. , ready to discuss it with other "familiar mathematicians" -+ Jüri Kurvits. and + Ljudmilla Rozhdestvenskaja. . What is the reason? And N.does it somehow change the situation? Here she was resolved in his youth. But I still do not give peace of mind that, without having loved mathematics before, I missed some opportunities in my life ...
