Main by the decree of the Central Executive Committee and the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR from 3 Sept. 1930 as the Institute of Archival Science; in 1932 it was renamed into the Historical and Archival Institute. M. H. Pokrovsky. In in-those 2 faculties - historical-archival and state. office work; 13 departments (auxiliary historical disciplines, history of the USSR of Soviet and pre-October periods, world history, Marxism-Leninism, history of state. institutions, history of the organization of archiving, office work, organization and mechanization of managerial labor, archeography, theory and practice of archiving, etc.). There are correspondence and evening departments. Postgraduate studies have been functioning since 1932. Since 1939, the Institute has been publishing Trudy (by 1965, 18 volumes had been published).
