The best programs for learning a foreign language. The best iOS apps for learning English

In learning English like any other foreign language, regularity is very important. therefore good way to improve it - use your smartphone when studying, because it is almost always with you. Often in queues public transport or just out of boredom we play some kind of game, or climb in social networks, but you can spend this time with much greater benefit! Various applications and services for learning will help us with this. of English language on Android. We have compiled a list of the 10 most useful and high quality ones.

Lingualeo

One of the most popular services for learning English. The Android application does not have all the functionality of the site, and is slightly inferior in releases to the version for Windows Phone. Nevertheless, the program is quite functional, since in it you can:
  • View a list of words in your personal vocabulary
  • Add new words yourself or from sets
  • Train words with 7 exercises
  • Read texts and translation of words in one click and watch videos with subtitles from TED
  • Take grammar courses (At the time of this writing, there was only one and was available only with the purchase of the "Gold status")
It all comes down to a playful way where you have to feed Leo the lion by repeating words, reading texts and the like. I really miss the widget of a random word from the dictionary, I don't understand why the developers have not done this yet, although I wrote to them about it.

Duolinguo

The first thing to note is that Duolinguo is completely free and does not contain ads, which is a rarity these days. This is also a web service application of the same name, and from it you have access to the full functionality of what is in the web version. As in Lingualeo, you need to feed a pet, this time an owl. True, the functionality and the way of teaching are seriously different.

You go through levels from the most elementary to difficult, in which you need to choose the right word, make a sentence from words, pronounce it or write it correctly. This is how all 4 basic language skills are trained.

Besides English, Duolinguo has about 30 other popular languages.

Polyglot

Paid author's course from the famous polyglot Dmitry Petrov. IN free version there is only the first lesson out of 16, for the rest you will have to pay. The course is well structured, everything is clearly stated. Does it make sense to pay for it? I would say that there is no more than yes, because all the information can be found for free on the Internet. On the other hand, there are tests and the materials themselves are already ready, you do not need to look for anything. So let everyone decide for themselves, that's what trial versions are for.

iVerb

This program has only one goal - to teach you English irregular verbs. Everything is done in a very high quality and structured manner. Verbs are divided into groups according to the formation of 2 and 3 forms and so they are remembered much easier. You can mark the ones you know with an asterisk, and then go through them in training. For a little money in iVerb, you can still open a funky game about phrasal verbs, but this is more you want to thank the author.

English Grammar Test

The English Grammar Test contains over 6,000 grammar tests that cover the entire grammar of the English language. Indeed, it is difficult not to find tests on some topic in it. You can take both mixed tests and tests corresponding to your level or chosen topic. it is very convenient that after passing all the tests from the block, you can look at those where you made a mistake, and explain to you from below why you should use this particular option, and not the one you have chosen.

Dictionary.com

Popular English dictionary for Android. The free version has ads, but due to its functionality, you can also buy the paid version. Here you can find examples of sentences, synonyms and everything that even the most seasoned linguist can think of.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a paid app from the site of the same name. It has perhaps the most beautiful design of all dictionaries. Here you will find both the frequency of the definition, and hints, and just a gorgeous function that shows sentences from popular media where this word or its word forms were encountered. Moreover, you can choose the subject of such offers, and when you click, go to the original. But not everything is so smooth. Firstly, Vocabulary does not work without the Internet, and secondly, the vocabulary itself is not that big. More precisely, you will find 99% of the necessary words, but if you translate some specific literature, then sometimes it is not enough.

Urban Dictionary

The most popular slang dictionary. If you love to learn English from movies and TV shows, then this service will help you out many times. Black, slang, obscene language, and just words from the common speech of Americans and British can be found here.

Google translate

Many people have this standard translator from Google, but not everyone uses it. But for Last year it has significantly improved the quality of translation and functionality. One of the most useful innovations is voice translation. Just a mega handy feature! When you have forgotten how some word will be in English, we just say it in Russian and you will be immediately given a voice and text translation. You can also do the opposite. Speech recognition is, as always, at a decent level.

Yandex translator

In general, it has less functionality compared to its Google counterpart, but is aimed specifically at translating Russian and English, so it often translates better whole sentences and phrases and shows more detailed use cases. As with most dictionaries and translators, there is an offline mode and the ability to add a word to your favorites.

You can learn English not only while sitting at a desk. Using a mobile phone, you can train in transport, during breaks at work, at any free moment. In this roundup, we'll take a look at apps for learning English, useful sites, and ways to learn English using your phone.

Last update of the review: 10.01.17.

Why are English learning apps useful?

The phone is a thing that we always take with us. He is there 24 hours a day. With it when it appears free time, you can "pump" all language skills:

  • Listening- listen to audio materials on the go, watch videos in English.
  • Reading- read books in English or English-language sites.
  • Communication practice- communicate using text (or even voice) messages on language social networks.
  • Vocabulary- learn words using special applications or in the process of listening, reading, communication.
  • Grammar- read theory, take exercises.

Some of the above is more convenient to do on a computer. For example, few people want to speak English while standing in line for a package. Some people don't like reading on the small screen of their phone. You can't do grammar or flashcards while jogging.

The telephone is most convenient for listening. After all, your hands are not busy and you do not need to look at the screen, which means you can listen, for example, while walking or digging beds in the country. With listening, we will begin the review.

1. Apps and sites for listening to audio on the go

Beginners often have a problem: a text that is understandable when reading is incomprehensible by ear. For example, the subtitles for a movie are understandable, but speech without subtitles seems like a jumble of indistinct stuck together sounds. This problem is solved with listening practice. To learn to understand English by ear, you need to listen daily and preferably more. Fortunately, no one forces you to practice listening while sitting at your desk at a designated time.

You can listen on the go, using time that is still wasted, for example, in transport, on the way to work, in line, etc. Polyglot Steve Kaufman, for example, often says that his favorite way to study foreign languages, which he knows about a dozen, - listen while exercising on a cardiovascular machine.

The main thing is to find suitable audio materials that:

  • Simple enough to understand at least the general meaning.
  • Interesting to you personally.

This can be English lessons, podcasts, news, audiobooks - whatever, depending on your interests and level of understanding of English.

Here are some examples:

1. Voice of America News

The main feature of these applications is smart subtitles, where you can click on a word to see the translation. But if you do not need this function, you can watch any videos in English and without any additional programs as I watched Friends.

2. English with LinguaLeo

My favorite mobile program for learning words is free app Quizlet. Here are its features:

  • Words can be taught in four modes.
  • Voice acting is automatically added to the words. The English voice acting is very high quality, but it is better to turn off the Russian one right away, as it is unnecessary and awful implementation.
  • It is convenient to add new words, create sets.
  • New words can be added to the PC (in the web version), so as not to suffer with the phone keyboard. The data is synchronized, so words added on the PC will also appear in the mobile app.
  • There are many ready-made word sets.

More about modes:

In Match mode, you need to match word pairs in two languages
  • Cards- double-sided cards mode. You can change directions to learn flashcards from Russian to English or vice versa. Automatic voice acting can be turned off, and separately for each language.
  • Learn- the word appears in Russian, you need to write it in English (or vice versa).
  • Match- a game in which you need to temporarily compare words in Russian and English.
  • Test- a comprehensive test for knowledge of words. Includes tasks 1) write a translation of a word, 2) choose the correct option, 3) “True \ False” - indicate the statement is true or false.

2. LinguaLeo

If you use the LinguaLeo service, the mobile application has a section called “Trainings” where you can learn words from your personal dictionary. There are fewer memorization modes than in the large version: 7 modes, 1 of which is paid. Unlike Quizlet and Anki, they use not only flashcards, but other exercises as well.

6. Applications for practicing grammar

Duolingo is a free application for learning foreign languages (not only English), which is a lesson course in which you need to learn words and various grammatical structures. Classes are held with an emphasis on practice. At the beginning of each lesson, a minimum of theory is given, after which a maximum of practice - mainly translation exercises. The program includes exercises for memorizing words, listening and even pronunciation (you need to speak a phrase into a microphone), but the main emphasis is on writing sentences, that is, in fact, grammar.

The difference between the mobile version and the large version is that in translation exercises, the text does not need to be entered, but added from words (see the picture above) - this task is much easier, because puzzle words serve as a hint.

2. LinguaLeo

Lingvaleo is one of the most versatile services for learning English, it also has a grammar section. There are fewer grammar courses in the mobile version than in the large one - these are the main topics, such as, etc. Without a premium account, courses are only available to a limited extent.

3. Puzzle English

The Puzzle English application has a "Grammar" section, which completely duplicates a similar section on the Puzzle English website. Here you will find video lessons on English grammar (lessons in Russian) and exercises for them. In the exercises, you need to make up phrases from English words... In the free version, lessons can be watched without restrictions, but there is a limit on the number of exercises performed per day.

4. British Council - Learn English Grammar

Application for consolidating grammar topics. Two modes Practice and Test.

  • Practice- choose a topic, for example, and practice with the help of different exercises: make a sentence from phrases, choose the correct form of a verb, compare words in two columns, etc.
  • Test- choose a topic, the program creates a test, after passing which you can see what mistakes were made.

In both modes, tasks are divided into three difficulty levels. The application is in English, most of the tasks are paid, but you do not need to purchase a subscription for all tasks, but separate sets (packs). For example, Beginner Pack 1 includes 325 questions with 16 topics. Each set costs about 60 rubles.

5. English Grammar in Use

Murphy's famous textbook as an app. A complete interactive tutorial with pictures, explanations (in English), voiced examples, exercises. The application is paid, except for the first group of lessons on Past and Present.

7. Applications - English courses

By courses, I mean a comprehensive lesson study of a language according to a plan, and not a study of, say, just one vocabulary. I will give three such courses with brief description and links to more detailed reviews. All three are suitable for learning from scratch and all three provide, in fact, knowledge and skills of the beginner-intermediate level.

1. "Teacher method"

Feature of "Ticher" - video explanations in Russian

Step-by-step, very detailed English courses with video explanations in Russian. The learning process looks like this:

  • The teacher explains the topic of the lesson.
  • You are doing a series of exercises.
  • Take the test.

To date, the Teacher Method courses have been released for four levels, from the children's course (from 6 years old) to the Intermediate level, but only the courses “For Beginners” and “Basic” are available in the mobile application, approximately corresponding. The application is paid, you can take one lesson a day for free.

The Teacher Method is part of the Puzzle English product line, detailed review read.

2. Busuu

With Busuu, you can learn not only English, but several others as well. Training is focused on practice. Minimum explanation and maximum exercise. An interesting detail - some written exercises are checked and corrected by other users (native speakers). Some of the lessons are paid.

At Busuu, foreigners correct your writing exercises and you help them.

3. Duolingo

I mentioned Duolingo above when I talked about applications for learning grammar. Duolingo is a comprehensive course in which you learn words, write sentences by ear as you go through topic by topic, but the emphasis is on writing sentences. The app is completely free.

It is important to understand that by taking a course, such as Duolingo, you will not speak like a native speaker. Courses help lay the foundation, which you need to develop by practicing speaking, writing, reading, listening. By this basis, I mean:

  • Basic vocabulary.
  • Basic grammar (basic concepts, constructions, principles).
  • Basic reading, writing, pronunciation skills.

It must be developed through practice.

Conclusion

Language proficiency consists of vocabulary, grammar, practice in four forms speech activity: listening, reading, writing, oral speech... With the help of mobile devices, you can practice in each of these areas, but to a different extent.

  • Vocabulary- learn words using flashcards (Quizlet, Anki) or other exercises (LinguaLeo).
  • Grammar- to read the theory, to consolidate in practice.
  • Listening- listen to online radio, podcasts, audiobooks, and other materials.
  • Reading- read English-language sites or books, with or without a dictionary.
  • ... Here you will find a teacher, native speaker or non-native speaker, for any occasion and pocket😄 I myself have taken more than 100 lessons there, I recommend you try it too!

Developers offer us a variety of educational applications. Among them, of course, are those that will help the user in learning the language. Let's take a look at those that, in our opinion, will definitely appeal to users. The presented applications are as free as possible, only two of them have paid content, but, however, you can do without it.

What is interesting about this application is that before the first use, you will be asked to independently assess and indicate your competence in the field of oral and written speech, vocabulary, grammar. Next, you need to indicate your interests in different areas(technology, society, art, etc.). You can specify the purpose for which you will use the application: for yourself, to improve certain skills, for work, exam preparation, etc. After that, you will already be presented with a list of tasks based on the completed test to determine the level and your interests. This is very convenient, as the application is suitable for any level of knowledge.

In terms of vocabulary, LinguaLeo has lists of words on a variety of topics, from colors and family members to collections of idioms and phrasal verbs. As for the study of grammar, in each of its sections you can take only one lesson for free, and then you have to pay (the cost of activation for Ukraine is 350 UAH). However, the Jungle section is free. Here you can watch various videos, read stories, listen to songs, etc. Again - on the topic that you indicated at the very beginning as interesting to you.

While working with texts, you can click on unfamiliar words - the translation will immediately appear, and they themselves will go to the "My Dictionary" section. Lexical units from the "Dictionary" will appear in the "Trainings" section, where there are many interesting tasks to practice words. In addition, listening to all lexical units is also available, which is a big plus. To fully use the application, you need an Internet connection, but the "Workouts" section is also available offline.

Despite the fact that the application has paid content (and not cheap at that), the most interesting part of it is available for free. As for the grammar reference, another application can be used as it.

When learning English, like any other, you need a grammar reference that will always be at hand. There are many options in English, but domestic developers also have something to offer us. The most ideal option in Russian, as for me, can be considered an application called English grammar which works offline. The program is an extensive reference book of four sections: grammar (morphology, syntax and punctuation of the English language), pronunciation (excellent textbook on phonetics), a section with proverbs and sayings, and the last part dedicated to idioms so that your speech doesn't sound boring. I must say that there are really a lot of proverbs and sayings in the application.

In this application, you can also choose a level - easy, intermediate or difficult. The "Grammar" section contains exercises for various topics- from prepositions and irregular verbs to conjunctions and modal verbs. The section "Words" also presents some basic vocabulary topics that you can practice. The program is free and does not require an internet connection.

But let's not forget that for a comprehensive language study, constant listening is necessary (listening to live speech of native speakers). In this case, we would advise you to resort to the official British Council app called English Listening. This program has several sections. The first of them - 6 minute English - is six-minute audio clips on various topics from Everyday life... English at work is an audio series about the girl Anna and what she encounters while working in the office. Learn the basics of Business English here.

Next is the Express English section. In these audio clips, you will hear native speakers speak up on a specific issue. Thus, you will learn how to correctly express your opinion in different situations and what constructions and phrases are needed for this. In the Words in the news section you can listen to various news from Britain and around the world, get acquainted with the vocabulary and constructions that are used in the means mass media.

And finally, The English we speak. In this section, facilitators explain the meaning of various idiomatic phrases, proverbs and sayings and give advice on how to use them correctly. As for me, one of the most interesting sections, as they will make your speech rich and varied. All audio clips have textual accompaniment and explanations of unfamiliar words. In some sections, for example, Words in the news, you will also be asked to complete tasks (there are keys to them, but the tasks themselves are non-interactive). We would recommend this application to users with good knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Definitely not for beginners. English Listening, of course, only works online.

Grammar is great. But knowledge of words is also necessary. This is where the BUSUU app comes in handy. It is quite popular among users, we can say that it is generally a favorite. With it, you can learn many new words and phrases not only in English, but also in French, Chinese, Japanese, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Russian and Turkish.

The app offers lessons for several levels: beginner A1, elementary A2, intermediate B1 and above intermediate B2. There is also a section titled “Course for Travel,” which has many lessons with useful vocabulary and phrases on the topic. This app is free, but you can subscribe to get access to additional lessons.

Words and phrases are matched by topic, which is pretty typical. Topics range from topics such as "Daily Responsibilities" and "Work" at the entry level to "Elections and Politics" and "Nature and Universe Studies" at the Above Intermediate level.

The lessons are structured as follows. First, flashcards are provided with new words and examples of their use. Next comes the training, then you have the opportunity to listen to the words in the dialogue, the translation of which into Russian is also attached. At the end of the lesson, you have the option to write written assignment- a small text on this topic, which will be sent for verification to native speakers.

If you know any other useful applications that belong in this top, indicate in the comments!

Top 8 apps for memorizing English words

English vocabulary learning apps help you replenish quickly and efficiently vocabulary... Without working on learning new vocabulary, words can simply be forgotten or remain in a passive vocabulary, so it is extremely important not only to learn the meaning of an unfamiliar word, but also to make efforts to memorize it.

Vocabulary Trainer (10,000 words and phrases)

A great app that takes into account your level of English and how much time you are willing to devote to training. First, you need to fill in information about yourself so that the application creates a training plan for you: the level, why you are learning the language, how long you can practice. There are two modes here: advanced learning (for memorizing words) and quiz (for repeating them). The second mode allows you to test yourself and fix words in your memory. I was pleased that you can add not only words from the application, but also create your own list of words. This is great if you prefer to learn words from books, movies, etc. In the settings, you can change the speed to a more convenient one for you. First, you are given a list of words, and then exercises to memorize them. At the same time, in one "set" exercises are diverse: enter a word after listening, select a picture for the word, enter a word by letter, etc.

In the main menu, you can select the function of creating your own list, reading news mode, learning words in a dream, watching your record and even listening to the radio in English.

Syllabus Application menu

English Vocabulary Trainer

The application offers to learn about 5000 English words that are used most often. Suitable for beginners and users with an intermediate level of knowledge. It will also be useful for students who speak English at high level but having problems with spelling.

To begin with, you should select the level of difficulty of classes: Easy - corresponds to the level of beginners, Medium - below average, Difficult - hard average level... You can select all three levels at once, then simple words will alternate with more complex ones. It is also suggested to choose which parts of speech you want to learn, you can leave the automatic settings to work on learning all parts of speech. In the settings, you can edit the initially selected data, as well as change the pronunciation speed. Slow playback is automatically selected, it is better to speed it up a little.
To start, press the "play" button located in the center of the screen, and then the exact same button below the word list. By the way, the words in the app will be divided into multiple lists, depending on whether you know them. For example, words that you could not translate during training will be added to the "difficult" list, so you do not have to look for unfamiliar words for a long time. In addition to choosing a translation for words, there is an opportunity to practice choosing antonyms and synonyms for words.

UVocab

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zenapps.zenvocabbuilderfree&hl=ru

Great trainer for creating flashcards with words and learning them. After downloading, you will have three modes available.

Learn
In this mode, you choose the words to study. By clicking on the planet icon, you can select any of the suggested dictionaries to search for a word. The big plus is that you can search for the words you really want, not the words that the app suggests. Searching through dictionaries allows you to look at all the meanings of words and examples of their use, so this will not be empty cramming without understanding the context.

Test
This is the training mode itself. Here you can select a test where you can work on a specific list of words, for example, work on words that you did not remember the previous time, or on words from the “favorite words” list. Also in this mode, you can choose the word-match training, where the words are divided into two columns, and you need to select synonyms from the second column for the words of the first. You can track your progress in statistics.

Revise
Here you can create flash cards, view your "favorite" words, as well as words that you could not remember.

The developers position this application as an excellent vocabulary trainer for those who are preparing for delivery. international exams as well as for people who work in an English-speaking environment. For example, choose one of the business English books. You can simply browse the list of suggested vocabulary or choose a training mode. It is possible to create lists of your own words. When choosing a "general vocabulary" you will also be presented with a list of books: academic vocabulary, business keywords, essential English words and vocabulary by topic (for beginners and advanced).

In the settings, you can change the audio pronunciation: British or American, select the mode of translation of words or their interpretation, set up a reminder of when you would like to start a workout, and also select the "dynamics" of activities.

Vocabulary Trainer

There are no pre-made word lists in this app, so you will have to fill it out yourself. You can create as many lists as you like and then work on each one. In the first column, you can write down the word itself, and in the second - its translation or interpretation. Then you can choose a mode of work on words for the quickest memorization. When choosing Trainer, you will be given a word, and you must remember its meaning, or you can look at the hint and check the correctness of the answer by clicking on the question mark. If you can't remember the translation right away, it's best to think a little before looking at the answer. The other two workouts are combining words with their meanings. In the match training mode, the application does not read the Cyrillic alphabet, so if possible, it is better to write down the interpretation of a word in English or a synonym for it.

Color verbs

You can test yourself by choosing the "Exam" mode. Here you need to select your level, after which the program will select words for you. You will be given the definition of the word, your task is to enter all three forms of the described verb.

Phrasal Verbs Dictionary

It is suitable for those who speak English at least at an intermediate level. Here you can choose the flashcard learning mode or the game learning mode. The cards offer you a huge number of lessons, each of which includes a portion of verbs, each has an explanation in English, an example of usage and pronunciation. Then each lesson passed can be pinned in the game mode. The application has a very cool mini-game where you need to not only know the meaning of phrasal verbs, but also be able to quickly navigate, otherwise you will lose and you will have to start all over again. Despite the fact that the toy is quite simple, you can “stick” on it and learn the verbs faster.
